“Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.”
― Gustave Flaubert
I had the wonderful experience of learning about Cathy’s Half Priced Book Store. I cannot believe that I have been in this area for the last 15 years and never learned about this store until last week. Oh, how I have been missing out!!! Located in the Manoa Shopping Center off Eagle Road and West Chester Pike sits this little gem. Packed from floor to ceiling are book that are all at least half off the original price. There is everything from children’s books and fiction to an amazing assortment of antique collectors editions and new releases.
When I first walked in, I was pleasantly surprised to find a few of the new releases I had been contemplating for $12.50 and $4.25!!!! Yes, that is correct- FOUR dollars and twenty five cents for a new release hard back book. Thursday is “Hardcover Thursday” where you buy one hard cover book and the second is 50% off. There are different specials every day of the week.
The staff who work at the store are completely tolerant of many children pulling books off the shelf and extremely helpful in finding books in the store There is a nice little kids section with a great Young Adult section as well. It is a very well organized store, especially considering the sheer volume of books!
Both Kirsten and I walked away with quite a book haul! Kirsten got The Assistants by Camille Perri, The Engagements by J. Courtney Sullivan, Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard and The Egypt Game by Zilphia Keatley Snyder. I purchased Cinder by Marissa Meyer, The Lonely Hearts Hotel: A Novel by Heather O’Neill, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth and Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak (One of my all time favorites).
The store makes a great outing. Next door is a Krispy Kreme donut shop . In my opinion, they are the best donuts ever made . Donuts and a new book? Yes please…..
