The Heart’s Invisible Furies is one of the best books I have ever read and will stay with me and haunt me for years to come. This is the first book that I have read by John Boyne and all I can say is WOW!!! This man can weave a story like few people can do. This book is a beautiful and poignant saga that begins in 1945 in Ireland and spans 70 years. While I was initially hesitant to read a book of this magnitude (both literally and metaphorically), I am so glad that I did. This book is truly wonderful. It moved me to tears and captivated me on every single one of the 580 pages.

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne begins with Cyril’s birth mother being expelled from her small Irish community after they discover the she is unwed and pregnant. Cyril’s birth mother is a feisty and independent woman who we follow throughout her lifetime. Charles and Maude Avery, a well-to-do couple, who like the idea of a child but do not have the first clue how to love and nurture a child, adopt Cyril. They always make it clear that Cyril is not a real Avery. The book moves forward in seven year increments throughout Cyril’s life.
“I’ve always believed that if women could only collectively harness the power that they have then they’d rule the world.”
― John Boyne,
When he is seven years old, Cyril meets Julian Woodbead. This is the boy that shapes the direction of Cyril’s life and changes it forever. Ultimately, their friendship leads Cyril to find out who he is and the man that he wants to be. While no description of this book can do it justice, this is a story that at its heart, is a story about love. The characters are deep and complicated. Their lives come together in beautiful and intricate ways. The story is sad, painful, deeply emotional and rich. It allows the reader to come face to face with prejudice and hate but ultimately acceptance and love. This book left me in tears of the best kind. It is the kind of book that you need to savor and ponder.

From the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Boy In the Striped Pajamas, a sweeping, heartfelt saga about the course of one man's life, beginning and ending in post-war Ireland
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery -- or at least, that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he?
Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from - and over his many years, will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country, and much more.
In this, Boyne's most transcendent work to date, we are shown the story of Ireland from the 1940s to today through the eyes of one ordinary man. The Heart's Invisible Furies is a novel to make you laugh and cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit.
