Heading off to school for the very first time is an exciting but scary idea for most kids. Many may be leaving their parents for the first time. New schools mean new rules, new friends, and new worries. I’ve always found that the easiest way to explain new situations to my own kids is through reading about them in books. The books below help to tackle different ideas – missing mom, anxiety about meeting new people or learning about what teachers do to get ready for school. Little Library: What Our Children Are Reading This Month

It’s all well and good when Jackie and I review new kids books or link them to activities. But lets be honest, our kids have the final say in what is read on repeat. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been charmed by a book only to read it to my kids for the first time and find them walking away mid-story. With that in mind, we wanted to make a list of the books we are reading this month is our homes. The great ones. The ones that we know by heart. We have uncovered great new finds in our recent watering hole searches and we’ve also dusted off a classic. So here we are, sharing with you the books that our children are reading this month. Think of it as the children’s version of Novel Ideas.

Not Your Average Princess: 11 Books to Encourage Children to be Unique

Let me start off by saying that I am a huge Disney fan. I have always loved the humor and joy that the movies bring and I love a happy ending. Now that I have a daughter of my own, I started looking at some of the classic Disney films with a little more criticism. Why didn’t Cinderella ever stand up for herself? How could Ariel find the love of her life and get married at 16? Isn’t there something wrong with a prince kissing an unconscious woman who cannot give consent? I want to make sure that my daughter has role models with a little more substance than some of the princesses from 50 years ago. Little Library: Fluff Reads

We want to give some book recommendations that are fun, enjoyable and not overly emotional. Sometimes you may want to dig deep and read a book that tugs on the heart strings but other times, you may just want to read for pure enjoyment. The books that we are recommending books that are perfect for the latter- fun, quick paced and the perfect pick me up. We have included a list of books/ series that will provide a great distraction from the real world.
