Fall in Love with Castle of Water by Dane Huckelbridge

One of the best reads of 2017. I fell head over in heels in love with Castle of Water.

My love of reading is sparked by the different roles a book can play in my life. Some stories prompt a smile when I need it most or allow an emotional release when I need a good cry. Other stories help me to expand my views of the world or contrarily, help me escape from reality. I can find joy in a best seller to be sure — some of my favorites are among the best known literary works in the world — but every once in awhile, a book I’ve never heard of falls into my lap at exactly the right time and fulfills all of my needs at once. These magic books are few and far between yet when they arrive they have the power to change you even if only while you are within in their pages. Castle of Water is one of these books. The 8 Best High School Reads & 2 to Pass on

The most exciting and engaging required reading from High School. Plus 2 high school reads we detest!

As we start thinking about school (*sigh) we can’t help thinking about the books that we read in high school. Some books we loved and shaped our tastes later in life. Vincent and Theo & a Trip to See Sunflowers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Vincent and Theo at Philadelphia Museum of Art

The folks at Children’s Book World recommended Vincent and Theo by Deborah Heiligman to my mother recently. She mentioned it to me so I promptly went out and read it too. I generally don’t read many works of non-fiction, but I found this particular book fascinating (as I mentioned here.) The relationship between Vincent Van Gogh and his brother, Theo, was complicated. Their love for one another was inspiring, though they did fight often as brothers are wont to do. Most of all, I loved the description of the art. When I remembered that Von Gogh’s famed Sunflowers was hanging in Philadelphia Museum of Art, Jackie and I promptly took a trip to explore.
