A GLEE-ful Read; The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer
“A villain is just a victim whose story hasn’t been told.”- Chris Colfer, The Wishing Spell
The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer is the first book in a five book series. The sixth book and final book is coming in July of this year!!! Once upon a time, in a town near or far, there lived twins named Alex and Conner Bailey. Alex is a studious bookish student while her brother is the class clown who is popular and prefers to sleep rather than study. Like most fairy tales, Alex and Conner live with their widowed mother. After all, what is a fairy tale if everyone is happy? The story begins one year after their father has died in a car accident. On their 12th birthday, their mysterious grandmother brings them the families heirloom book of fairy tales. A la Narnia, the book is a portal to a different world: The land of stories.
This story is a wonderful combination of classic fairy tales mixed with modern elements. I read The Wishing Spell with my son so that we could laugh out loud together. We both loved it. Throughout the story, Alex and Conner encounter Goldilocks, Cinderella, and Snow White (old favorites) as well as some new friends (froggy) who help them on their journey to try to get back home. The Wishing Spell is enchanting, endearing and addicting. The only complaint that I have is that the Characters of Alex and Conner seem so stereotypical at the beginning of the book. There is a lot of character growth throughout the books however, at the beginning, they are the typical “brain” and “goof-off”.
We cannot wait to read the rest of the books in the series: book two: The Enchantress Returns”, book three: “A Grimm Warning”, book four: Beyond the Kingdoms” book Five is entitled an “Author’s Odyssey”. And, like I mentioned, the newest book will be coming out in July of this year.
What did you think of The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer? Did you read the rest of the series?
