This book is based on the true accounts of Syndrome K, the deadly and highly contagious disease that was fabricated by doctors in Rome to save Jewish people from Nazi extermination.

In the past, Courtney Coleman has had a troubled past and decides to enlist when Pearl Harbor is bombed. While he is there, he meets Julia Bradbury, an Italian ballerina, and together with another allied medic and the hospital staff, they work together to try and save the Jewish people from the Nazis.

In the Present day, Delaney Coleman has recently lost her grandfather, a WW11 veteran. Soon after, Delaney’s family is contacted by an Italian woman who claims they have a family heirloom. Delaney travels to Italy to discover her grandfather’s past.

WWII

This amazing WW11 historical fiction novel takes place in three timelines. While I was a little bit confused initially, I could not put the book down by the end. I did not know about syndrome K before I read this book and it was absolutely fascinating.

Switchboard Soldiers

Switchboard Soldiers by Jennifer Chiaverini

I’ve been reading WWI books non-stop because I’m fascinated by the way modern warfare met traditional tactics in the Great War. I’m particularly interested in the role women played in helping the Allies.

Chiaverini brought the Switchboard soldiers (the women who operated the telephone lines) to life in the most interesting way. I loved their bonds of sisterhood, how they stayed cool under pressure, and learning just how crucial they were to the war effort.

Always Be My Duchess by Amalie Howard

I have a thing for historical romance books like Bridgerton, so I knew I had to read the first in the Taming the Dukes series that Amalie Howard wrote.

Lord Blackstone needs a faux-fiance to secure a land deal, and he stumbles upon the perfect partner in out-of-work ballerina, Geneviève. We all know what happens in faux-dating romances, and yet, it’s still satisfying when the couple falls in love EVERY TIME.

I’m looking forward to the next one in this series and is a perfect pick for our ultimate list of beach reads 2023!

Tomorrow and tomorrow

Author: Gabriele Zevin

Year: 2022

Genre: Fiction

More info: New York Times Bestseller

Spice Rating:đź’‹đź’‹

Age Range: 18+

From the Author of “The Storied Life of A.J Fikry” comes a story that spans thirty years. Sam and Sadie have been friends since childhood when Sam opened up to Sadie in a hospital when he wouldn’t talk to anyone else. When they reconnect in their college years, they work together to create a hit video game, it ends up changing their lives forever with its juggernaut success.

As they navigate the ups and downs of friendship and working together, they come together and drift apart during the important moments that shape their lives. This novel examines what it means to love and be loved and how friendships evolve and shift over time.

Gun violence, Suicide

Unlike the majority of readers, I liked this story but didn’t love it. It was very character-driven, which I normally enjoy, but the lack of communication really frustrated me at times. It was understandable at first, but eventually got old. Still, I enjoyed learning more about the world of gaming, I liked following Sam and Sadie’s friendship through highs and lows, and I liked the balance between heavy-hitting topics and funny, quirky moments. It was heavy on the video gaming lingo and development process which I found fascinating but others might find dull.

Best New Thrillers/ Mysteries for July 2022

The It Girl by Ruth Ware

The It Girl by Ruth Ware

Ruth Ware’s slow-burn style of writing psychological thrillers continues to impress. This Dark Academia murder mystery focuses on the murder of April, an It Girl at Oxford.

Her accused murderer has recently died in prison, causing her best friend, Hannah to question if she wrongfully put the wrong person in prison. As Hannah reevaluates the murder a decade later, new information comes to light that has her questioning everything she knew about that time in her own life and April’s.

This pick from our summer reads 2023 is a long book and a slow burn, but I didn’t see the ending coming! I thought I figured out the murderer early on and was dead wrong.

The Family Remains

Author: Lisa Jewell

Year: 2022

Genre: Thriller

More info: New York Times Bestselling Author

Age Range: 18+

Of all the Lisa Jewell books, this is the one that I was most looking forward to reading. I put it third on this list after much debate. I loved The Family Upstairs and I think in order to get the full experience with this sequel, I think you need to that book first.

The book begins with the discovery of bones in the Thames River that is related to a 30-year-old cold case.

Rachel Rimmer is shocked to discover that her husband has been found dead in his cellar and Rachel has to answer questions that delve into Michael’s past. He is connected to Lucy Lamb who is trying to settle her family after leaving London 30 years ago.

Rape, sexual assault

All the stories come together in a way that only Lisa Jewell can write. It is rare that a thriller has a part two that makes sense. This is a well thought out thriller.

Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier

Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier

I was about 10% of the way through when the story suddenly came to life. When Paris Peralta comes home and finds her husband dead in the bathtub, she panics, knocks herself out, and finds herself the suspect in his murder.

Paris finds herself under media scrutiny and gains the attention of people from her past. There is so much to this domestic thriller that is unexpected. I don’t want to ruin the surprises for you. But obviously, the mentions of Canada warm my heart!

reputation

Author: Sarah Vaughan

Year: 2022

Genre: Thriller

Age Range: 18+

Sarah Vaughan, othe author of Anatomy of a Scandal, is a killer when it comes to legal thrillers with a one-two punch. This particular story revolves around Emma, a British MP on trial for murder charges.

The victim? A tabloid reporter with a scoop on an inflammatory story revolving around the MP’s daughter. But it’s so much more complicated than that and secrets unravel at every turn. If you love political fiction, this is a great pick!

The story is multi-faceted and left me guessing what would happen next. It was a page-turner for sure.

I absolutely loved the GMA book club pick Oona Out of Order and it was on our list of the best of the year. I was so excited to read this witch book and it did not disappoint.
