Quick Summary of Theo of Golden
Theo arrives in the city of Golden, Georgia, for 1 year, just after Easter. During that time, he decides to buy works of art from a local artist named Asher Glisson. These 92 portraits are hanging in a local coffee shop called the Chalice. Once he purchases the portraits, he hand-delivers them back to each of the subjects of the drawings. His plan is to buy every one of the portraits. During the year he is in Golden, he befriends the locals. They change his life, and he theirs.
Theo of Golden Summary
Theo arrives in Golden from New York. Golden is a town near Atlanta in Georgia. We learn that Theo is proficient in five languages, but his native language is Portuguese. He enters a coffee shop called The Art of the Chalice. It is owned by Shep and Addie Carlisle. Inside, there are 92 portraits for sale from the master portraitist named Asher Gleason.
When one sells, he makes a new one, but people are not buying them. Theo is surprised.
Theo, who is 86 years old, buys a picture of a woman and writes her a letter. In that letter, he explains that he would like to give her back her picture because he believes she should have it.
The first letter is to Minette Prentiss. She is wondering about Theo’s motives for giving her the portrait. The letter was written on beautiful paper with a fountain pen. Initially, Minette hoped her husband, Derrick, had purchased the portrait.
After re-reading the letter multiple times, Minette and Derrick agree to meet Theo at the fountain on Thursday to get the portrait.
When they arrive, Derrick is pulled into the Verbivore, the local bookshop owned by Tony. By the time Derick gets out, Minette is already meeting with Theo on the bench. He does not share why he is in Golden. However, he does share that he was surprised people had not bought their own pictures.
We learn that Minette and Derrick were high school sweethearts who have been married for five years. Theo chose Minette’s portrait because she had the kindest face. Her eyes remind him of a woman he loved 50 years ago. He says he sees strength, bravery, kindness, and sadness in her eyes.
She confides that her parents are divorced and her father is not a good father. Her mom moved to Europe, and she was raised by Gammy. She shares that she wants to be a mom.
Minette shares that Asher Glisson is her uncle. He is married to Brooke, and they have a daughter named Brooke. Her father, Pearce, is Asher’s brother.
Theo decides that he will use his intuition to decide which portraits to purchase. He will also look into the faes of the portraits and choose Faces of those who have suffered loss.
Theo heads to the bookstore to find a history of the city. He makes a friend named Simone, who is a music student at Golden University. There, he also meets the penny loafers. These are the men who hang out in the bookstore.
Theo goes to Ponder House to inquire. James Ponder is a broker and Consultant. Theo would like to employ Mr. Ponder to help him with a few things, and he would also like to live in the third-floor apartment in Ponder House for 6 to 7 months. Ponder House apartment is a gorgeous two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with a beautiful view. Because it is so old, the balcony railing is not up to code.
Despite the fact that he has told his secretary, Mrs. Gidley, that they are not taking on any more clients. He agrees not only to take Theo as a client but also invites him to be a tenant in the apartment.
Theo pays six months of rent and gives Mr. Ponder $100,000 to be put in a trust. This money is to pay for the various expenses.
He gives Mrs. Gidley the handwritten letters so that she can mail them. Portrait number #2 goes to Junior Perryman, a one-armed bartender. Portrait number #3 goes to Bun Everson, short for Abundance. She came with her friend. They share that they want to start a magazine. Portrait number four goes to Frankie Knowles, a 12-year-old in a wheelchair who comes with his parents. He is a NASCAR fan.
Portrait # 14 goes to Kendrick Whitaker, who is a night custodian. He arrives an hour late to the meeting with Theo because he wasn’t sure he was actually going to meet Theo. He was very skeptical and could not understand why someone would want to do this for no personal gain.
Kendrick works at night so he can stay with his daughter, Lamisha (nickname Scooby), in the hospital during the day. His mother works during the day so she can stay with Scooby at night while Kendrick works. Scooby has had a prolonged stay in the hospital due to multiple injuries from a car accident in which her mother, Kendrick’s wife, died.
Theo learns that it is Lamisha’s eighth birthday and has flowers, cake, and art supplies delivered to the hospital.
theo, who has trouble sleeping sometimes, here’s a woman singing at 4 AM. She rides her bike away and seems to disappear.\
Tony wants to know where Theo is from. Theo is very good at avoiding answering personal questions. Theo and Tony begin to form a closer friendship. Tony is much more genuine when they are alone and shares that he is a Vietnam vet.
We learned that Theo had a daughter named Tita. He became a very successful entrepreneur. He regrets not paying closer attention to how his wife reacted to the fame. His wife and daughter died in an accident when Tita was ten. His wife was driving drunk.
He stayed in his house in France so he could be near his daughter. He was in a state of depression. He started walking as a way to cope and was slowly recovered from his debilitating grief. He still needs to be next to a river at sunset so he can feel like he is close to his daughter.
Mr. Ponder shares that Theo was a client of his father’s.
Mr. Ponder approaches Dr. Ikande, a renowned surgeon, and offers to pay for Lamisha’s treatment at the hospital. This is all done anonymously on Theo’s behalf. He also arranges for the grandmother to be on paid leave until Lamisha leaves the hospital.
Asher and Theo meet. They discuss what makes good art. Asher believes good art should make you feel something. Theo believes that good art must have love.
Ahser and Theo are in Asher’s studio. Theo notices a painting with the handwritten words at the bottom, “Me, painting you, painting”. He also notices 4 letters on the wall. Three are from famous artists, and one is from his grandfather.
Nobody knows Theos’ last name. He has no email, and his credit card simply says “PH Ltd.”
Theo writes a letter to Ellen, a homeless woman who lives in Golden so he can give her the portrait of her. She shares that she has never received a handwritten letter before. When Theo asks her if she has lived in Golden her whole life, she panics and seems to get stuck in the past. Theo tries to help her by asking her about the happiest day of her life.
Ellen shares a very sad story in which her boyfriend was killed, and when her daughter was born, they took her away. The police would not even let her see her baby, whom she named Willa Francesca, because they discovered that Ellen had left a mental hospital. The police and nurse snuck the baby into Ellen’s room so she could see her baby one time. When Theo looked at her, he said he saw the eyes of a mother.
Ellen feels like she can trust Theo and begins to go to church to sit with him. Theo realizes that Ellen loves to read.
Basil Cannonfield was a teacher. When his sister, Genevieve, was diagnosed with cancer, her husband left her. Basil moved in with her to take care of her and left his job as a teacher. When she died, her husband, who was still the beneficiary of her life insurance, took the money and many of her belongings from the apartment. Basil could not go back to teaching and had been doing street music for the last three years. What does Theo see in his portrait? Wisdom and faithfulness, a tender heart with a wise soul.
We learn that, as a little boy, Theo had been inspired by a fisherman painting sunsets.
Tony and Theo went to the fountain, where Tony talked about his experiences in Vietnam. He accidentally shot and killed a little boy with whom he had had a previous relationship. He has not forgiven himself.
When Lamisha is released from the hospital, she asks Theo to come visit her at home. They had developed a relationship over the time she was in the hospital and he continues to visit her once she is home. Theo brought with him a sketchbook with a story and illustrations he had made especially for the little girl.
Theo and Simone talk about how his grandmother saved money so that he could one day buy himself a cello.
Katherine Lesker is a journalist who wants to do a story on Theo. He promises to give her an interview before he leaves, but will not give her information before then. He does not want what he’s doing to be publicized. He gives her the portrait and asks her to trade it for the old image she has of herself.
The next portrait is supposed to go to a woman named Clarise. She does not show up. Instead, her boyfriend, named Cleave Torber, shows up yelling and charging at Theo. Derrick intervenes before Theo is hurt, but Torbrr destroys the portrait. Theo takes the ruined picture out of the frame and lays the portrait in a drawer in his apartment.
Kendrick and Simone meet, and both realize that they are friends with Theo.
The next person who is supposed to receive a portrait is Lena. Unfortunately, a man referred to as “the talker” is sitting next to them on the bench at the Fedder, yelling and talking into his phone extremely loudly. Theo begins humming and then singing very loudly until the loud talker leaves.
Ellen is excited to take Theo on a bike ride. They attach a “student driver” sign to the back of his bike. They talk about how motion is lotion for the body and the soul. Ellen talks about coming to Golden from Athens. She takes him on a birdwatching expedition where they find a kingfisher nest, and they see a red-winged blackbird. She gives him a gift that she made using feathers and bark.
Theo can’t sleep and goes for a walk in the park, where he meets Kendrick. He asks Theo for advice. He went to court to see the man who injured Scooby and killed his wife. They learned the man’s name is Mateo Mendez, who also has an eight-year-old little girl. She has cancer and is receiving treatment.
He had been deported to Guatemala, but came back to see his little girl. He was driving at night so he would not be caught when he fell asleep at the wheel and hit Scooby and killed Kendrick’s wife. He has not seen his daughter in a year.
Theo and Kendrick talk about the difference between justice and mercy. Kendrick talks with Derrick, who is the DA, and wants him to tell the judge that Mr. Mendez has suffered enough already. Kendrick lets Derrick know that 18 months ago, Derick put him in jail for something he didn’t do. He tells Derrick that he needs to start looking at people.
Theo has now delivered 43 portraits. He asks everybody the same question: Tell me about yourself.
Now, with a change of season, it is time for Theo to take a break from giving out the portraits.
Theo hires a good lawyer for Mr. Mendez. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was released with time served. His lawyer is trying to get him a hardship visa.
Theo invites Tony to his house on Armistice Day to celebrate Tony’s birthday. He has Chef Bouchard cook him a meal. He is the chef at a restaurant in town called the Canto. He also hired someone named Mia, who works at the restaurant to help him, put together the food, and plate the dishes.
Theo brings out a special bottle of wine and shares that this bottle of Port was made when Theo worked at the vineyard. There is a chance that Theo helped make this bottle of wine with his own feet. Tony shares a little more about himself in his history.
Mia shares with Theo that when she was at his house and was looking for napkins, she accidentally saw the picture of Clarice. She shares that she is Clarice and was able to leave her abusive ex-boyfriend. She asks Theo to destroy the picture because she is not that person anymore. He does.

Why Kirsten likes it
Theo of Golden was a meandering story that helped me wind down for bed each night while I was reading it. Simple in premise, the story nonetheless left me contemplating the kindness of strangers and how we all impact the world around us.
Why Jackie likes it
The story is a lovely idea of someone doing kind things for others and making meaningful relationships in the process. I liked the characters and their relationships, even if the story felt like it was predictable.
Theo of Golden Summary Almost at the End
Asher invites Theo to his house for Thanksgiving. Pearce, Minette, Derick, Simone, Basil, and Basil’s girlfriend (Trina) will all be coming. Theo gladly accepts. Brook and Minette are doing the cooking. Minette is sharing that she feels like it is not the right time for her to have kids because of the pressure her father puts on her to succeed. Pierce finally arrives at Thanksgiving dinner late.
Who is Pearce?
Pearce is the loud talker from the bench at the Fedder/
Pearce proceeds to ruin the meal through his selfish attitude. He is completely oblivious. When Asher shares the news that his daughter Samantha is getting engaged, Pierce asks, “What does he do?” (referring to the finacé). Theo tries to change the subject by asking, “What was your mother like?” This works for a minute before Pearce has to leave. There is a problem with his work. He will not give his workers the day off for Thanksgiving because they are immigrants, and he says they don’t celebrate.

The performance is wonderful, and Basil is called on stage for an encore. The song is a piece he wrote for Theo with Basil and Kendrick. Simone wasn’t the only one with a surprise. Theo has arranged to bring his parents to the performance. Afterward, he gives Simone his portrait, and they share a meal together.

Simon looks over and sees somebody else lying on the ground.

From the first page, I was absolutely drawn to this book! What an astonishing debut novel. The storytelling is wonderful and the pacing is perfect. Each of the characters had such a unique voice that I had no trouble differentiating them. I listened to and read this book, and I loved both versions in equal measure. The audio version is a full cast. The letters were written so beautifully, it made me want to start writing letters as correspondence. Gifted by PRH Audio

Plot
Elle Harlow is a folk singer who reached the height of her fame in 1973. After a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, she disappears. Two decades later, when a meteor strikes her small town, Marijohn Shaw, also a folk singer, uncovers information linking her to Elle. Suddenly, Marijohn questions everything she thought she knew about herself.
Told in three parts, Elle and Marijohn each get their own narratives before their stories dovetail for the final portion of the book. From Nashville to Appalachia, this immersive story is filled with tales of the music industry in the 1970s and early 1990s. It’s a story of loss and redemption, and the fight within us all to be seen for who we truly are.
Why Kirsten loves it
I was captivated by Marijohn and Elle’s individual stories, but when they merged, I was swept into their world. You must listen to this story as an audiobook because all the original songs peppered throughout the book are sung with a musical accompaniment. I felt as if I was a fly on the wall watching two extraordinary artists come into their own.
I think this will be the runaway hit of the summer, because it’s a perfect balance of thought-provoking themes and imaginative storytelling. I’d also like to respectfully request an adaptation of this story! #gifted by Macmillan Audio and Celadon.
