“If I had a little book, I would name it Friend. Friend would go wherever I went, our story would never end.” – Nina Laden, If I Had a Little Dream
The best part of being a parent is experiencing the world through the eyes of your child. Most kids aren’t jaded or hardened by the realities of life. The smallest things, that adults take for granted, can spark delight and awe in toddlers and preschoolers. If I Had a Little Dream by Nina Laden is the perfect book to celebrate the wonder and joy of just being alive.
I’ll never forget the first time we took our oldest son (pictured above) on vacation. He was 11 months old and when we stepped off the airplane out into the warm, windy Aruba air, he was overcome with glee. Each time the wind blew in his face, he giggled and laughed, causing everyone around us to laugh along with him. That simple joy of experiencing the wind is not something I would normally notice as anything more than a nuisance, but that moment was pure magic.
I had the same feeling of magic and wonder when I read this gorgeously drawn, wonderfully written picture book. The navy and orange color scheme is striking. The rhyming prose about the world will give you pause as you connect with your inner child. I’m fairly certain that this is one of those children’s books that was actually written for adults. The last line had me choking up as I read it to my boys.
For a book that tugs at the heartstrings and makes a wonderful bedtime story, look no further. If I Had a Little Dream will be added to my must-have book list for any parent. I’m considering getting a copy for the grandparents in my life as well (hi mom!)
