Kirsten introduced me to this series after her oldest son read the first book. She insisted it was an epic series that reminded her a little bit of Harry Potter. I was definitely skeptical until I read the first book. Since then, I have listened to all the books in the car while on family road trips (except book 8.5). Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger is interesting and complex. The amazing Keeper of the Lost Cities characters are part of the reason for the series’ popularity if you ask my opinion. They are ever-changing and developing. Because of this, Kirsten and I had to think long and hard about how to organize the list to make it easier to refresh your memory before you read the next book.

I have listed the Keeper of the Lost Cities characters below. I tried to keep the information succinct but detailed enough to help you remember important details. That means that if you are not up-to-date with the books, some of the information listed below will be spoilers. If you have not read all the books, please be aware.

Keeper of the Lost Cities Character Guide

The Main Keeper of the Lost Cities Characters

Sophie Elizabeth Foster – The protagonist of the series. She is a telepath who discovers she is an elf and must navigate a new world. Throughout the series, Sophie discovers she is more than a telepath. She is also a Polygot, Inflictor, Teleporter, and an Enhancer. Her eyes are brown which has never been seen in an Elf and made it hard to find her while she was living with her human family in San Diego. Fitz found her when she was 12 years old and brought her to the Lost Cities where she started a new life as an elf.
Fitzroy Avery Vacker (Fitz) – A talented telepath and one of Sophie’s close friends. He is also the son of a prominent family in the elvin world.
Keefe Sencen – A talented empath who becomes one of Sophie’s closest friends and allies. He is also a joker and very mischievous.
Biana Vacker – Fitz’s younger sister who can manipulate light. She is a good friend to Sophie. She is a Vanisher like her mother.
Dex (Dexter) Dizznee – He is one of the most powerful technopaths in the series and one of Sophie’s closest friends. He’s known for his inventiveness and tech skills. He has a crush on Sophie but she is oblivious. Before becoming friends with Sophie, he has no friends at Firefox.
Tam Dai Song – A telepath and one of Sophie’s friends. He is known for his close bond with his twin sister, Linh. Tam is a shade. He is not introduced until later in the series when Sophie goes to Exillium. He is forced to be a member of the Neverseen for a short period of time.
Linh Hai Song – Tam’s twin sister, who can manipulate water. She is also very talented but lost control of her powers when she was younger and flooded Atlantis. She was exiled to Exillium and her brother went with her.
Wylie Endal– Adopted by Teirgan while his dad, Prentice, is in exile. His mom, Cyrah, died by light leap. Initially, Wylie blames Sophie for his father’s memory break.
Maruca Chebota– She used to be Biana’s best friend before they had a falling out. She is a Psionipath
Marella Redek – One of Sophie’s first friends at Firefox Academy. She was late in developing her powers and although she wanted to be an empath, she becomes a Pyrokinetic which is a prohibited power.

Sophie’s family

Human Family

William Foster (Connor Freeman)– Sophie’s human dad. He had his memory wiped by Elivin Washers after Sophie left for the elvin world to prevent the pain and heartbreak of knowing they lost a daughter. Washers changed his name, job, and identity after they were relocated to prevent Sophie from finding them.
Emma Foster (Kate Freeman)– She had her memories wiped by washers. See note above
Amy Foster (Natalie Freeman)– She is Sophie’s human sister. She had her memories wiped by washers. See note above.

Adopted

Grady Ruewen – Sophie’s adoptive father. He is an animal rehabilitator who has interesting animals at his home Havenfield including a T-Rex. He is a Mesmer, someone who can control other living things. This is not a forbidden ability but one that is closely monitored by the Council
Edaline Ruewen – Sophie’s adoptive mother. She was initially skeptical to take in Sophie because she had not been seen in society since her daughter, Jolie, was killed. She becomes very close with Sophie and begins to conquer her horrible anxiety
Jolie Ruewen– Daughter of Edaline and Grady. She died in an Everblaze fire set by her fiance Brant.

Supporting Characters

Vacker Family

Alden Vacker – Fitz and Biana’s father and a powerful and influential member of the elvin community. He works for the Council as an Emissary. The Vacker family lives at Everglen. He is a powerful Telepath
Della Vacker – Fitz and Biana’s mother, known for her elegance and influence. She is a Vanisher
Alvar Vacker– He is Alden and Della’s oldest son who had disappeared and was presumed dead. He was a longstanding member of the Neverseen which tarnished the family’s reputation.

Dizznee Family

Kesler Dizznee– Dex’s dad. Owner of Slurps and Burps, an apothecary where Dex sometimes helps out. He is known for his powerful potions and elixirs. He is talentless. He married Juline for love even though it was considered a bad match since his wife has a special ability. Their family is often looked down upon by upper members of elvin society
Juline Kalea Dizznee – She is a Froster who is also known as Squall. She is Edaline’s sister. She is looked down on because of her “bad match” and because she gave birth to triplets
Lex, Bex, and Rex– Dex’s triplet siblings. Multiple births is looked down on in elven society.

Sencen Family

Lord Cassius Sencen– Keefe’s dad and a member of the Black Swan. He is an Empath
Lady Gisella Sencen -She was one of the leaders of the Neverseen. Now she has split off and has her own agenda. She is a Polyglot and a Conjurer.

Members of the Black Swan

Many of the Keeper of the Lost Cities characters are members of the Black Swan. The Black Swan are a group of elves, dwarves, and gnomes who are working together to make the world better and stop corruption.

Mr. Forkle– Also known as Magnate Leto and Sir Aston. Mr. Forkle was a twin and one of the leaders of the Black Swan. He was also the head of Project Monnlark which was the project to manipulate Sophie’s genes. He also spent years as Sophie’s next-door neighbor in the human world so he could watch over her. He saved her life more than once. He is a powerful Telepath.
Prentice – Father of Wylie, Keeper for the Black Swan, and a telepath who was sent to Exile. His mind was broken by Quinlin and Alden.
Tiergan Alenefar– Also known as Granite is a Telepathy mentor at Foxfire
Timkin Hex– Stina’s father, also known as Coiffe. He is married to Vika who is an empath. Despite being talentless, it was not considered a bad match. He tried to take Silveny away from Havenfield because he takes care of unicorns.
Livvy– A physician who is also known as Physic, is Amy’s temporary guardian. She is married to Quinlin who is a Telepath but he wants her to file for a “match fail”.
Wraith– is a Vanisher who works with the Black Swan
Blurr– He is a Phaser.
Calla– A Gnome who died saving the Gnomes from a plague and becomes a Pnakes tree. She helped design some of Sophie’s DNA. Sophie and Calla had a very close relationship in part because Calla helped Sophie sleep without nightmares when she arrived in Alluveterre.
Tinker– We do not know Tinker’s other name because she has not used it she lives by herself. Her role in the Black Swan is a secret. She works closely with Dex to help him with his ability since she is a very powerful Technopath

Councilors

The Council is essentially the governing body in the elvin community. They determine the laws and what the consequences are when the laws are broken. Many of the Keeper of the Lost Cities characters have dual roles, especially the councilors. Because elves live for so long, the election for new council members occurs very infrequently.

Councilor Oralie – A member of the elvin Council who supports and mentors Sophie. She is an Empath and is Sophie’s biological mother. She had a very strong connection with Councilor Kenric but, councilors were never allowed to get married or have children.
Councilor Bronte – A member of the Council who often clashes with Sophie and her friends. He an Inflictor. He is also more than five thousand years old.
Councilor Kenric – Another Council member who plays a significant role in the series’ political landscape.- he died
Councilor Terik– One of twelve members of the Council. He is a Descyer (detects abilities) and is supportive of Sophie and her friends whereas many other members of the Council are not.
Councilor Alina – Former Firefox principal, she is also a Beguiler
Councilor Emery– He is a Telepath who uses his powers to speak to the councilors in private telepathically and then speaks for the Council
Councilor Clarette– She is a Ploygot
Councilor Liora– She is a Conjurer
Councilor Zarina– She is a Charger (control lightning)
Councilor Noland – He is a Vociferator (can manipulate sound)
Councilor Darek– He is a Phaser but he uses Telekinesis well (this is a skill, not a power).
Councilor Ramira– She is a Vanisher
Councilor Velia– She is a Guster
Councilor Kenric – Was killed when Fintan used Everblaze to burn down Eternalia. He saved Sophie, Fitz, and many of the other council members before dying. Oralie gives Sophie his cache.

Firefox Characters

Firefox is the name of the School Sophie and her Friends attend. Many of the Keeper of the Lost Cities characters have a connection to the school in some way.

Magnate Leto– Also known as Mr. Forkle. He is the Principal at Firefox. For more information, click here
Sir Aston – Also known as Mr. Forkle. He was Sophie’s teacher at Firefox. For more information, click here.
Elwin– He is an elvin doctor who heals Sophie on the many occasions that she needs it. He is known for giving his patients stuffed animals.
Stina Heks– Parents are Timkin and Vika Heks. Initially, she is horrible to Sophie. She bullies her. In later books, they come to more of an understanding when Sophie helps heal the gnomes. Her parents are part of the Black Swan
Jensi Babblos – A friend of Sophie who is known for his ability to shape-shift. He was one of the first people at school to talk to Sophie.
Sir Tiergan – A skilled elf who helps train Sophie and her friends. For more information, click here

Member of the Neverseen

The Neverseen are a rebel group who oppose the Council and everything they stand for. I consider the Neverseen to be the villains of the Keeper of the Lost Cities characters.

Lady Gisela Sencen– Once a leader of the Neverseen and Keefe’s mom. For more information, click here
Fintan Pyren– He is a former counselor and former leader of the Neverseen. He is a Pyrokinetic who is currently in jail. He is supposedly older than Bronte. He has caused a lot of death and destruction.
Brant Alger– Jolie’s fiance who accidentally killed her after starting a fire he could not control. He pretended to be broken for years to Grady and Edaline while they took care of him. He dies in Lodestar.
Ruy Ignis– He is a Psionopath (can make forcefields) who was exiled. He has no remorse or conscience when he does terrible things to Sophie and her friends

Gethen Ondsinn– Telepath and member of the Neverseen
Trix– A Guster who keeps his identity a secret under a cloak
Umber– Was an extremely powerful Shade who is now dead. She knew how to use shadowflux. She was Trix’s significant other
Vespera– She was an ancient elf who had been hidden away for so long that nobody remembered her. She had experimented on human and wanted to know how they killed each other without shattering. She was killed in Stellarlune.
Rayni Aria- Also known as Glimmer, is a powerful Flasher. She creates the bonds that force Tam to join the Neverseen. She later breaks those bonds.

Important Animals

I wanted to include some of the animals in my list of Keeper of the Lost Cities Characters. While not all of them can talk, they all play an important role in the story.

Iggy– This is Sophie’s pet imp
Silveny– Sophie discovered Silveny and was the last female alicorn alive. Sophie and Silveny have a telepathic relationship. Sophie can even talk with Silveny.
Greyfell– Initially, Greyfell is thought to be the last alicorn alive, and with his death, the countdown to extinction for everyone would begin. He lived in a sanctuary for years and was traumatized from remembering the death of his species and his past mate.
Luna and Wynn– Luna and Wynn are Greyfell and Silveny’s twins. Luna is a female who was born one minute before her brother. Luzia Vacker built a troll hive where Luna and Wynn could finish growing and developing after they were born prematurely.
Bullhorn– Elwin’s pet Banchee. He can sense when someone is in mortal danger and will shriek until they are out of danger.

Bodyguards

After Sophie is abducted in the first book, Sophie gets a bodyguard. Gradually, all of Sophie’s friends have bodyguards as well. At one point, Sophie even has an entire interspecies protection force following her everywhere she goes. I thought these were the important bodyguards for a list of Keeper of the Lost Cities characters.

Sandor– Goblin and Sophie’s bodyguard. He started his protection duty after Sophie was kidnapped in the first book. He is very fond of Sophie and also very protective. Sophie says he is over-protective but she is also constantly being hunted.
Nubiti– A dwarf and one of Sophie’s former bodyguards
Flori– A gnome who is Calla’s great, great grand-niece and sings to the panakes tree. She is another one of Sophie’s bodyguard.
Tarina– A stage 4 troll and one of Sophie’s interspecies bodyguards
Botros- Also known as Bo is one of Sophie’s Ogre bodyguards and is married to Ro, but they hate each other. He has also been a bodyguard for Tam, Linh, and Glimmer
Romhilda– Keefe’s bodyguard and king Dimitar- commonly called Ro, she is an ogre, full name Princess Romhilda
Grizel– Fitz’s goblin bodyguard
Lovise– Dex’s Goblin Bodyguard
Woltzer– Biana’s Goblin bodyguard
Brielle– Grady’s former Goblin bodyguard. She was killed

2. Mr. Snuggles is Fitz’s stuffed dragon
3. Mrs. Stinkbottom is Keefe’s gulon
4. Stinky the Stegasarus belongs to Elwin
There are a few more emotional support stuffed animals, after all, there is a lot going on with everyone in the series. I love that Messenger does not shy away from showing the characters are vulnerable as well.

Epilogue
