Brief Summary of Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy
Dominic Salt and his three children, Fen, Raff, and Orly live on Shearwater Island, a tiny island near Antarctica. The tides are rising and the island, home to the largest seed vault in the world, is being evacuated. The researchers left and the Salt family are the only inhabitants left on the Island.
When a woman named Rowan washes ashore, the family wonders how she got there and why.
Detailed Summary of Wild Dark Shore
The book begins when Rowan washed into the rocks on Shearwater, an island not far from Antarctica.
Fen sees the smashed boat and the woman nearly dead and swims to get her. It is a miracle that she is alive because the rocks are deadly. They manage to get the woman inside the house. She is battered and hypothermic.
The island has a large number of wildlife, including seals and royal penguins. Ships are supposed to arrive monthly to bring supplies. The storm that washed Rowan ashore also caused damage to the lighthouse and the wind turbines. This means that they have no means of recharging the power.
Fen spends a lot of time with the seals. She does not sleep in the house. She watches over the seals and tries to protect the babies from being crushed by the large male seals. Orly, who is 9 years old, knows more about the seeds than anyone.
Rohan is slowly getting better, but we still have no idea why she is on the island. Orly likes to spend time with her and tell her about all the different seeds.
We learn that Dominic still spends a lot of time talking to his wife who died nine years ago. He has all her things preserved in their room and talks about her with the kids very little. They are all clearly missing her. Later in the story, we learn that in the past, when Dom would visit the mainland, he would visit Clare’s parents and bring Claire’s stuff with him back to Saltwater.
They find the rest of Rowan’s boat with no bodies. They know there is no way anyone else could have survived.
Rowan feels very skeptical of everything she is being told. If everyone has evacuated the island, why is the family still there? Rowan wants to look at the research station, why hasn’t Dominic sent out an SOS? She is worried that she may be in danger on the island. She wonders why the family is still there when everyone else left.
Dominic finally tells Rowan that the comms are all down and there is no way to communicate with anyone off the island. Someone broke them, and he feels just as weary of her because she arrived unscheduled after the comms were destroyed.
We learn about the fur seals on the island. Alex, one of the researchers was trying to help the population come back from near extinction. Rowan spends a lot of time with Orly and asks his questions as a way to get information she feels she is not getting from the rest of the family. Rowan finds Fen on the beach with the seals and they decide to try and take the zodiac boat to the site of the crash. It’s too dangerous and they return without recovering the bodies.
Hank Jones, the team leader of the base was Rowan’s husband. She does not understand why he would leave the base and the family would stay on the island. Rowan and Hank lived in Australia. She built her house herself with love and care. She has a special relationship with the snow gum trees that were on the property. Although she took every precaution when building to ensure her house would survive any fires, trees caught fire and burned her house down.
Raff keeps a hydrophone to record whale songs. It is his most prized possession, other than his violin. Raff composed music to complement the whale song. He developed a close relationship with Alex and now that Alex is gone, he has not touched the violin or the hydrophone.
There is mention that Raff has difficulties in school. Perhaps he is dyslexic, but this is never mentioned. Fen is having trouble dealing with his emotions. Dom taught him to box to get out his frustration.
When Hank first went to the island, he sent lots of letters. Over time, the letters stopped and started getting desperate. The world needed biodiversity through the seeds in the vault. Any lost seeds will be gone forever. When they were told to evacuate the island, Hank had to choose 50% of the seeds to leave behind. Hank sent three emails to Rowan with increasing desperation saying that he felt like his life.
Raf feels she didn’t protect his sister. We know something happened but we don’t know what.
Dom makes reference to not “slipping up”. The family is keeping something secret. The family also makes trips to the seed bank every few days to check the temperature now that the power is out.
Hank and Rowan disagreed about whether or not to have children. Rowan thought it was not ethical to bring children into the world.
Rowan begins to suspect that Dominic did something to Hank. She brings Orly to the lab to look for a substance that detects blood. When they arrive at the seed vault, Rowan points out where the concrete is deteriorating. Raff and Rowan spend the night in the field hut. She sprays the chemical and finds traces of blood. Raff reveals that Alex died.
On their way back from the hut in the zodiac boat, they see a humpback whale. It breeches and comes down on top of the little boat.
Rowan and Raff survived. She had a little brother named River. He was the youngest and Rowan was responsible for him. They lived on a houseboat and River drowned. Rowan blamed herself, even though she was very young.
When Hank left for the island, he had no plans to ever come back to Rowan. He was hoping she would change her mind about having children.
Alex came to the Island eight years after his brother Tom. Alex Tom and Naija live in the red field hut. Alex decides he wants to do something special for Raff’s eighteenth birthday. The two of them decide to spend the night together in the green field hut even though Tom says that it is not safe with a storm coming. In the middle of the night, the storm is really bad. Tom and Naija bring a zodiac to come and fetch Alex and Raff. The two get in a boat and assume Tom and Naija are behind them, but realize the green hut has been swallowed by the sea.
Spoiler Below
Tom and Naija are dead. Alex kills himself from the guilt. He feels responsible for his brother’s death
Rowan and Dom talk about Hank. The two have a growing intimacy.
Fen burns everything that belonged to her mother in a big fire on the beach.
Dom freaks out and Fen explains that she is trying to free him from the memories that haunt him. Raf breaks his hydrophone

Why Kirsten loves it
This isolation book is so haunting. I could not get it out of my head. Kristin Hannah is an amazing writer with wonderful characters. Her stories feel realistic almost to a fault. They are heartbreaking and heartwarming and utterly unforgettable. I did not think that I would like a book about Alaska but, I could not put it down.
Why Jackie loves it
Another Kristin Hannah story, another NYT best seller – and for good reason! I liked this coming-of-age story set in the Alaskan wilderness. The setting is truly its own character, bringing an element of desperation to that story that wouldn’t exist in another locale.
