The GMA Book Club List 2022

The Maid

Author: Nita Prose

Year: 2022

Genre: Mystery

#1 New York Times Bestseller, EDGAR AWARD Finalist, Anthony Award Winner

Age Range: 14+

Molly Gray works as a maid in a grand hotel and gets joy from leaving things orderly and pristine. Molly struggles with reading social cues and has had even more trouble since her gran can no longer help.

When Molly finds the body of Mr. Black in a room at the hotel, she becomes a prime suspect and will need all her friends to help her. She calls her friend, Mr. Preston, the doorman at the hotel, for help. His daughter is a lawyer. Soon, it becomes clear that Molly, in her naivete, is involved in a drug scandal as well.

I loved the description of this book and I hoped it would live up to my expectations. It did that and more. I adored every minute of this story and closed the last page smiling. Molly is such a wonderful character who has more depth than is apparent initially.

But when the origins of the violin come into question, along with Ray’s claim to the instrument, the plot keeps thickening.

Racism

Truly the story was a gripping page-turner I could not put down. Slocumb’s ability to weave a multi-faceted tale was astounding. When it comes to novels about music, this is a must-read mystery book!

The Love of My Life

Author: Rosie Walsh

Year: 2022

Genre: Thriller

More info: March 2022 Good Morning America Book Club Pick

Age Range:

I was swept away by this marvelous story. Emma and Leo’s love story seems to be one of romantic legend. They have a charming daughter, Emma has just beaten cancer, and they have a wonderful life.

But soon Leo is discovering secrets from Emma’s past that don’t add up to the life Emma has described to him all these years. As readers, we see Leo trying to uncover who his wife really is and Emma trying to prevent him from doing just that.

This book was not what I was expecting but I can’t stop thinking about it. The twists and turns had me second-guessing so much of what I had read. It’s a story of love, strength, mystery, and secrets. An absolute must-read.

LEssons on Chemistry

Author: Bonnie Garmus

Year: 2022

Genre: Historical Fiction

More info: April 2022 GMA Book Club Pick

Age Range: 14+

I don’t even know where to begin with this unique contemporary fiction story. Elizabeth Zott is a chemist in the 50s when women were expected to know their place in society- the kitchen and the home. I did not know what to expect when the book started and I never could have guessed where the story would take me.

Elizabeth struggles to be taken seriously in her field and as a single mother, in this amazing book. So when an offer to host a cooking show for women is put in her path, she reluctantly takes it.

She uses her no-nonsense attitude and chemistry principles to teach the women in America how to cook and follow their dreams outside of the home.

Zott is a quirky character like Eleanor Oliphant with a charming daughter and a dog whose inner monologue is as quirky as hers. This is also an absolutely wonderful book about motherhood!

Sexism

Elizabeth Zott is never characterized as neurodivergent. However, the way that she relates to the other characters leads me to believe that she is. I love the character growth and I was cheering for her success throughout the entire book. Can I also tell you how much I LOVE Six-Thirty?

I loved seeing a woman before her time being a powerful strong role-model. She thrived and set a great example for her daughter. That is not even to mention the narration of this book! She is so great and so is six-thirty.

Kirsten Miller delivers a killer magical realism novel about a trio of women who receive powers after going through menopause. The point of their powers is to bring to justice men who rape and kill women. I was thoroughly entertained by this beach town mystery that pits the women against billionaire men around them.

Sexual Assault, Rape

As usual, GMA delivers with its latest pick. This contemporary fiction book will not disappoint.

Spice Rating:💋💋💋

Age Range: 18+

Florence Day is a ghostwriter for one of the most successful and well-known romance authors in the industry. The name is apt seeing as how she can also see ghosts. But, after a terrible break-up, she no longer believes in love.

When her new editor will not give her an extension on her deadline, she is in a panic and is on the verge of losing her career. Now, the unthinkable has happened. Her beloved father has died and she must return home to bury him. When she sees the ghost of her editor outside the funeral parlor, she cannot understand why he is there with her, and her life is turned upside down.

This book was a complete delight to read from the very first page. If you are looking for a book for fall, I love this adorable adult fantasy romance book that is totally unique. It reminds me a little of the 2005 movie starring Reese Witherspoon.

Mika in Real Life

Author: Emiko Jean

Genre: Contemporary Fiction

More info: August 2022 GMA Book Club Pick

Age Range: 16+

Mika’s life is falling apart in this thought-provoking novel. She’s lost her job, she’s running low on funds, and she just received a call from the daughter she gave up for adoption 16 years ago. As Mika crafts a life she thinks her daughter Penny will approve of, she’s forced to find her own potential and grow up to be someone Penny can admire.

Rape

I was frustrated by Mika in the beginning of the story, but she grew on me. This was a different take on a coming-of-age novel, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Infidelity

I have a soft spot in my heart for meddlesome mothers and family drama books about sisters. I love when a story brings me into the hearts and minds of an entire family in a way that has me rooting for each character to find their proper place within each other’s lives.

Mad Money

Author: Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan

Year: 2022

Genre: Fiction

More info: October 2022 GMA Book Club List Pick
New York Times Bestseller

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 16+

Picoult’s books are always so readable and this one is no exception. Olivia McAfee has had to start over and raise her son alone after leaving her abusive cardiothoracic surgeon husband.

She is raising her son Asher alone and always hoping that she left in time- before her son would remember the abuse. Now, Asher’s girlfriend, Lily, is dead and Asher is the prime suspect.

There were so many things about this book that made it so readable, I can see why it was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for 2022 and is an Audie Awards 2023 finalist. There is a lot to discuss which makes this a perfect pick for books for book clubs.

Domestic Abuse, Transphobia, Suicide attempt

Jodi Picoult writes books that are page-turning from the beginning. This is no exception and I love that she had a co-writer fr this particular book. There have been a few books in the past where I wish this was the case and I am so glad that she was able to tell this story in an authentic way.

Someday Maybe

Author: Onyi Nwabineli

Genre: Fiction

Wow. This was a searing and emotional look at the grief surrounding the loss of a spouse. Eve opens the book by explaining that her husband, Quentin, has committed suicide, and she is picking up the pieces of her own life.

We are taken through the days and months immediately following his death as Eve navigates a mother-in-law from hell, reentering society, and a surprise left behind by Quentin.

Grief

Her feelings were all over the map and felt so deeply true to the grief process. I loved Eve’s Nigerian family and how they came together to try to put her back together. This is one book I will recommend over and over again.

Set in the not-so-distant future, this dystopian novel describes a world where climate change is wreaking havoc on our planet.

Wanda is born during her namesake hurricane, to a mother who dies on the same night. As Wanda grows, she has to deal with the worsening landscape of a world dying around her. As she tries to survive, she also navigates relationships with loved ones and the surrounding community.

Death, Climate Change

I’ve never read a dystopian novel that hit so close to home. With the climate crisis at a breaking point, this felt like reading about an inevitable future.
