Death of a Child
Why Kirsten loves it
Hall paints, such a vivid picture and explores Beth’s feelings so well that I forgot I was reading fiction. I cried on numerous occasions and was left wanting more.
It reminds me of Where the Crawdads Sing in some ways and The Light We Lost in others. The mystery of who was shot and why was a masterful narrative choice that kept the story moving at a clip. I would give this novel six stars if I could I truly couldn’t put it down. Gifted by Simon & Schuster

Year: 2018
Genre: Historical Fiction
More info: July 2018 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
The Cuba Saga #1
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
I picked up Next Year in Havana after Reese Witherspoon recommended it in July – I wasn’t disappointed! This historical fiction tale is about a young Cuban American woman, Marisol, who visits Cuba for the first time.
She’s arrived to spread her grandmother’s ashes but what Marisol thought would be a simple quest turns her world upside down as she uncovers secrets from her grandmother’s past.
Why Kirsten loves it
Cuba becomes a character in this novel and it’s truly spectacular. I was so sad when my time with Perez Family ended, but I’m delighted that Chanel Cleeton decided to return to the family.

Daisy Jones & The Six
Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid
Year: 2019
Genre: Historical Fiction
More info: March 2019 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
The book is laid out like a VH1 Behind the Music style interview. It’s laid out in chronological order about the making of the band Daisy Jones & the Six, but the story is told in interview style from a dozen sources.
It’s a story about the music scene of the 1970s in Hollywood when the band The Six meets Daisy Jones and together they rocket to superstardom! Among the drama of touring, there is also a forbidden love story or two, and plenty of crazy parties!
It’s truly the perfect mix of historical fiction, romance, and rock ‘n’ roll.
Why Kirsten loves it
This book needs to be listened to, not read. The audio version has a different narrator for each character and the performances are stupendous. I was overcome with emotion numerous times while I was listening.
Why Jackie loves it
This celebrity fiction story about the rise and fall of one of the hottest bands of the 70s was so utterly fabulous – it’s pure sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll in all the best ways.

The Christie Affair
Author: Nina de Gramont
Year: 2022
Genre: Historical Mystery
More info: February 2022 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
I adored this mystery novel set during the 11 days of Agatha Christie’s disappearance. It’s told from the perspective of Christie’s husband’s mistress and it is utterly absorbing.
This biographical fiction novel is totally fictional because there is no account of what actually happened to Agatha Christie during her missing days. There are layers of mystery throughout, with a side of a love story.
Why Kirsten loves it
I never felt I would be able to sympathize with a mistress but I was cheering for her by the end. I was also enchanted by the setting of the small hotel. If you love historical mystery books, this is a must-read.

The Nightingale
Author: Kristin Hannah
Year: 2015
Genre: Historical Fiction
More info: March 2023 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
This is a remarkable story of two sisters who live in France. As historical fiction goes, this one set the standard for me. It is one of my all-time favorite books. It details how they survive the Second World War under Nazi Occupation. The sisters are separated by time and have completely different experiences in the war.
This book is one of the books that should be read in a lifetime. It is a total tear-jerker and should be essential reading! If you have not read this book and are looking for a pick for your next book club, you should consider this one. I will also point out that this is a book about WWII, not the Holocaust. While there is a subplot with a Jewish character, this by no means is a book about the Jewish experience during the war.
Trigger Warnings
WWII
Why Jackie loves it
The powerful story and the bonds of sisterhood in this book make it an unforgettable book. I cannot wait to see the movie adaptation
Why Kirsten loves it
I love historical fiction and read them all the time. This book was still filled with surprises and the writing grabbed me from the first page.
Adaptation Information

Author: Balli Kaur Jaswal
Year: 2018
Genre: Fiction
More info: March 2018 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Looking for a laugh-out-loud contemporary fiction book? This novel is about an Indian woman trying to marry her modern English identity with her parents’ conservative Indian values.
She takes up teaching a writing course for widows in her community and she learns so much about herself and them in the process. Between each chapter are hysterical and sometimes raunchy tales written by the widows in her class. I dare you not to smile while reading this book about books.
Why Kirsten loves it
This was such a unique concept for a book. It is one of the first books that I have read that celebrated older women as protagonists. This is the OG nod to older women.

Such a Fun Age
Author: Kiley Reid
Year: 2020
Genre: Fiction
More info: January 2020 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Such a Fun Age is a remarkable debut contemporary fiction from Philadelphia native Kiley Reid. This novel made me think and question the role our environment plays in who we are and who we become. I love how the author addresses racism without drilling it in.
Rather, she shows what it looks like from the overt to the subtle. The book focuses on the relationship between a Black woman who is a nanny and her employer who is a white woman. There is a strange dynamic in that the employer feels like they are friends but the friendship is one-sided.
Trigger Warnings
Racism
Why Kirsten loves it
Kiley is a Philadelphian and Jackie and I loved discussing this book with her in person. This is a perfect pick for your book club to discuss.
Why Jackie loves it
This book made me think about it long after I finished the book. The characters are so strong and jump off the page.

True Biz
Author: Sara Nović
Year: 2022
Genre: Literary Fiction
More info: April 2022 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
True Biz is an eye-opening look at the life of deaf high schoolers in boarding school. The ins and outs of deaf society are fascinating and made me realize I knew so little about the deaf community.
Set at River Valley School for the Deaf, the story revolves around 2 students, Austin and Charlie, as well as their headmistress, February who is fighting to keep the school open for the students who desperately need it.
Trigger Warnings
Ableism, Death of a Parent, Medical Trauma
Why Kirsten loves it
I learned about the ASL vs hearing aids debate. I learned about the politics and drama that go into running a deaf school. I learned that there is a black version of ASL and it’s possible to be racist when signing. And of course, I fell for the romantic entanglements and blooming friendships between the students.

The Most Fun We Ever Had
Author: Claire Lombardo
Year: 2019
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
More info: April 2024 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Lombardo’s debut is a tremendous contemporary fiction book about the complicated dynamics and hidden secrets of the Sorenson parents and their 4 daughters.
The story alternates between the present day and the past. In the current storyline, Jonah reunites with the daughter who gave him up 15 years prior. The flashbacks touch on moments in the Sorenson family history that are returning to haunt them.
Why Kirsten loves it
I’m a sucker for character-driven novels. Each of Lombardo’s characters is deliciously flawed and complex. She writes in a way that brings characters to life. I could have sworn I’d met them before.
Why Jackie loves it
I love that at the heart of the story, the book is about the many forms of love and how to live well. I cannot believe that Claire Lombardo is not a 50 or 60-year-old woman with children of her own.
