My Favorite Taylor Jenkins Reid Books with Reviews

#1

the seven husbands of evelyn hugo 1

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Year: 2017

Genre: Historical Fiction

Spice Rating:💋💋

Age Range: 16+

A tell-all about a fictional Elizabeth Taylor-esque celebrity’s rise to Hollywood stardom, her seven husbands, and the true love of her life.

Evelyn Hugo has asked an unknown reporter, Monique Grant, to write her life story in a no-holds-barred book. There is a bit of mystery around why Monique was chosen and Evelyn certainly has her fair share of hardships as she claws her way to the top.

The drama and suffering add dimension to the story that makes it so much more than fluff, though the inner workings of Hollywood were fun to read too. The story seems so candid that I forgot that Evelyn Hugo was not a real celebrity.

Domestic Abuse, Homophobia

Taylor Jenkins Reid slays with this story finding the perfect balance of glamour and grit. Evelyn seeks to change her life and in doing so, changes for the better. Every person who has read this book at my recommendation has loved it

Not much is yet known about the movie adaptation except that Leslye Headland is set to direct while Liz Tigelaar is working on the script.

Daisy Jones and the 6

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Year: 2019

Genre: Historical Fiction

More info: March 2019 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 16+

The book is laid out like a VH1 Behind the Music style interview. It’s laid out in chronological order about the making of the band Daisy Jones & the Six, but the story is told in interview style from a dozen sources.

It’s a story about the music scene of the 1970s in Hollywood when the band The Six meets Daisy Jones and together they rocket to superstardom! Among the drama of touring, there is also a forbidden love story or two, and plenty of crazy parties!

It’s truly the perfect mix of historical fiction, romance, and rock ‘n’ roll.

This book needs to be listened to, not read. The audio version has a different narrator for each character and the performances are stupendous. I was overcome with emotion numerous times while I was listening.

This celebrity fiction story about the rise and fall of one of the hottest bands of the 70s was so utterly fabulous – it’s pure sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll in all the best ways.

Carrie Soto

Carrie Soto was the world’s most decorated tennis player who has come out of retirement to take back the title. Carrie was trained to be the best there was from a young age and has dedicated her entire life to winning- at the expense of everything else in her life.

I loved this book so much, that I could not put it down. I alternated between reading and listening to the book and have to say that the audio version was really fantastic. My heart was pounding with each and every game played.

Nina Riva is having her annual summer party which is famous for its epic scale and exclusivity. But this year, the party will end with devastation. Nina and her siblings are famous children of one of the biggest rock stars of all time and they each have their secrets. Perfect for a list of books about music, right?

I have loved the last two books by Taylor Jenkins Reid so much that I often recommend them to friends for their universal appeal. I had high hopes for this family saga but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

I enjoyed the book but I felt that it was a little drawn out at times. Still, I loved Nina’s character and her ability to surf puts her on our list of books about women in sports!

The same team that adapted Little Fires Everywhere is set to adapt this book to TV for Hulu. Liz Tigelaar will produce it and Amy Talkington will be the writer.

Maybe in Another Life

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Year: 2015

Genre: Romance

Spice Rating:💋💋

Age Range: 16+

Inspired by the Gwyneth Paltrow movie, Sliding Doors, this story is about what would happen if Hannah Martin had gone home with her old flame or chosen to go home with her best friend after a night out in LA.

Unfolding into two vastly different narratives, we get to see which parts of Hannah’s life change and which would remain the same. I loved seeing how certain things were inevitable – though arrived at in different ways. I also loved the way both stories ended. It’s such an optimistic ending.

In the story, told in a dual-timeline narrative, newly married Elsie loses her husband of 9 days. As her timeline as a widow moves forward, we also get to see her romance with Ben unfold in the previous narrative. As she struggles to overcome her grief, Elsie connects with Ben’s mother who was unknown to her prior to the tragedy.

Grief

This is Taylor Jenkins Reid’s debut novel, and while it is good, it’s clear that she has grown her craft a great deal from this book. I found the story to be compelling, but it didn’t get me choked up the way TJR books can usually do.

When she bumps into an old high school friend, Sam, she starts to think that maybe she can live her life again and be happy. Just when their life together is beginning, Jesse is found alive. This book is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. It makes you wonder, what would I do?

After I Do

Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid

Year: 2014

Genre: Romance

Spice Rating:💋💋

Age Range: 16+

A couple unhappy in their marriage decides to try to save it by not seeing or talking to each other for an entire year.

Cancer

This was my least favorite of the TJR books because I just couldn’t get around the premise. While the concept was unique, I just couldn’t get behind that idea. Why not try therapy? Why not just divorce? This book wasn’t for me.
