2027 Beyond the Bookends Book Club List
The Beyond the Bookends Book Club is unlike any other, and it’s about to be our third year! Not only does the book club follow our yearly reading challenge, but every member of the book club will have an opportunity to talk with the authors of each book! Below you will find the 2027 Beyond the Bookends Book Club list.

Book club has truly become the highlight of our month. In past years, we had the pleasure of speaking with Robert Kolker, Clare Leslie Hall, Bruce Holsinger, Emma Grey, and Virginia Evans, among others.
When we started the book club, we knew that everyone deserved the opportunity to ask questions of their favorite authors because we found so much pleasure in talking to them, too. To join the Beyond the Bookends Book Club, check out your options.
The 2027 Beyond the Bookends Book Club chooses a book that fulfills a prompt from the 2027 reading challenge. Kirsten and I provide you with a reading guide to keep track of your thoughts, and then we discuss the book. The author then joins us, and let me tell you, we get some juicy information. From alternate endings to character changes, we really get some seriously good tea.
If you are not interested in becoming a member but want to join in with reading our picks, we love that as well. The reading challenge is free for everyone.

Plot
Parker’s debut novel was supposed to be the book of the decade. He even earned a 7-figure advance. But when Selina Chen, a renowned book reviewer, trashed the book, it became the flop of the decade.
When he publishes his sophomore novel, Selina reviews it again. However, this time, when she bashes it, Parker confronts her at a party, and it is caught on video. It goes viral and starts a literary feud where everyone takes a side. The debate begins between writers, reviewers, publishers, and fans: What is the role of a reviewer, and when does it get too personal? Can an author confront someone who gives them a bad review?
When Parker and Selina start to chat privately, outside the public sparring matches, they begin to see a different side of each other.
Why Jackie loves it
I loved the way this story developed. The conversation about what a review is, and what people should be writing in a review- love it or hate it. This novel is beautifully written by someone who clearly loves the power of the written word. I cannot wait to discuss this book with everyone.

Plot
Iris is fresh out of a breakup with the man she thought was going to marry her, is facing stagnation in her job, and is stuck in life. She is desperately in need of a fresh start when she goes to her elderly neighbor and gets a custom perfume that has an almost magical effect on her body. With her newfound confidence, she gets a new account at work and attracts the attention of more men than ever before.
As she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, she also finally addresses childhood trauma related to the death of her parents, her feelings toward her cousin (who has a drug addiction issue), and her quest to freeze her eggs so she can be a parent someday. Her custom perfume is the impetus for romantic entanglements that give her validation and create more drama than she can keep up with.
Is wearing the perfume and all its rewards worth the hassle? Should she go back to being boring old Iris? Can she figure out who she is at her core and, more importantly, what she wants out of life? And when she does, will she have the courage to reach for it? Each of these questions will be addressed when this book comes to a fantastic conclusion.

Why Kirsten loves it
My obsession with this book is real. I couldn’t put it down. The imagery was so beautifully written that I could picture each scene vividly in my mind as if I were watching a movie. The story is rich, the imagery is lush, and it’s easily one of my favorite books of the year. Gifted by Ballantine Books

Why Kirsten loves it
I’m a sucker for a multi-generation novel to begin with, but add in layers of food, romance, and finding yourself, and you know I’m gonna dive right in. But this book is more than the sum of its parts in a way I can’t quite explain. I adore it.
I was rooting for all of the Graces, charmed by their eccentricities, delighted in their triumphs, and I was shattered by their sorrows. I wanted to dine with the Graces to hear their stories firsthand and watch their banter come to life. I’m PRAYING we get an adaptation of this story because I want it to come to life even more than it already is in my brain.
I’m so excited to talk with Elizabeth for our book club. I can’t wait to dive into her brain and find out the inspiration behind this story. Gifted by Atria and Simon Audio.

Plot
Elle Harlow is a folk singer who reached the height of her fame in 1973. After a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, she disappears. Two decades later, when a meteor strikes her small town, Marijohn Shaw, also a folk singer, uncovers information linking her to Elle. Suddenly, Marijohn questions everything she thought she knew about herself.
Told in three parts, Elle and Marijohn each get their own narratives before their stories dovetail for the final portion of the book. From Nashville to Appalachia, this immersive story is filled with tales of the music industry in the 1970s and early 1990s. It’s a story of loss and redemption, and the fight within us all to be seen for who we truly are.
Why Kirsten loves it
I was captivated by Marijohn and Elle’s individual stories, but when they merged, I was swept into their world. You must listen to this story as an audiobook because all the original songs peppered throughout the book are sung with a musical accompaniment. I felt as if I were a fly on the wall watching two extraordinary artists come into their own.
I think this will be the runaway hit of the summer, because it’s a perfect balance of thought-provoking themes and imaginative storytelling. I’d also like to respectfully request an adaptation of this story! #gifted by Macmillan Audio and Celadon.

While she tries to figure out what happened on the island in the past, she’s also trying to get her own life in order.

Why Kirsten loves it
This story reminded me of a mash-up between Under the Tuscan Sun and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. It was heartwarming and thought-provoking without being too heavy, unlike many other WWII stories. I fell for all the characters in this story! #gifted by Berkley.

Plot
I DEVOURED this contemporary fiction story of a billionaire music mogul who releases her death announcement 2 days early so she can read her own end-of-life articles. The best part was that during the snowstorm that trapped her family with her at the ski chalet, she neglected to tell them about her terminal illness and her hare-brained scheme.

Why Kirsten loves it
We get to see the impact the decision has on her family as well as get a look at her colorful life before her cancer diagnosis. This family drama was so compelling; I totally understand why it was a book club pick.
