Perfume Fiction Books

Earlier this year, I noticed a trend in fiction books. Perfume fiction books are becoming a thing! I love the multisensory effect of reading books about perfume. It feels like I am in the books, with descriptions so vivid that I can smell the perfume from the pages. This is a list of my favorite perfume novels!

Perfume Fiction Books

As soon as I read Full Bloom, I wondered why we do not see more perfume novels. The universe must have been listening because immediately after that thought, I found three more perfume fiction books. These are books that pay tribute to the power of scent- almost like Fiction Books about Wine honor the subtlies of taste.

Genre: Literary Fiction Romance

Age Range: 18+

Iris is fresh out of a breakup with the man she thought was going to marry her, is facing stagnation in her job, and is stuck in life. She is desperately in need of a fresh start when she goes to her elderly neighbor and gets a custom perfume that has an almost magical effect on her body. With her newfound confidence, she gets a new account at work and attracts the attention of more men than ever before.

As she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, she also finally addresses childhood trauma related to the death of her parents, her feelings toward her cousin (who has a drug addiction issue), and her quest to freeze her eggs so she can be a parent someday. Her custom perfume is the impetus for romantic entanglements that give her validation and create more drama than she can keep up with.

Is wearing the perfume and all its rewards worth the hassle? Should she go back to being boring old Iris? Can she figure out who she is at her core and, more importantly, what she wants out of life? And when she does, will she have the courage to reach for it? Each of these questions will be addressed when this book comes to a fantastic conclusion.

Infertility, Fire

My obsession with this book is real. I couldn’t put it down. The imagery was so beautifully written that I could picture each scene vividly in my mind as if I were watching a movie. The story is rich, the imagery is lush, and it’s easily one of my favorite books of the year. Gifted by Ballantine Books

The Scent Keeper

Year: 2020

Genre: Fiction

Age Range: 16+

The premise of a little girl, Emmeline, growing up on an isolated island learning about scents had me picking up the book, but the hard-life lessons she learned along the way kept me flipping the pages.

I snagged a copy of The Scent Keeper because Reese Witherspoon told me I should. I did not know that this pick would be a magical realism book. I usually love her picks and this was no exception. I’ve seen many mixed reviews on this one, but for me, it was a reflective read about what is means to be loved, and the memories that scents hold. And with a touch of magic, this book hit the mark.

Meet me in monaco

Author: Heather Webb and Hazel Gaynor

Year: 2019

Genre: Historical Fiction

I was so excited to get a copy of this story which is set against the backdrop of Grace Kelly’s wedding to the Prince of Monaco. Grace is making her final appearance as a Hollywood starlet at the Cannes Film Festival before her wedding. She’s ready to escape the spotlight and hides in Sophie’s perfume shop. There, the two women bond – but the story is more about Sophie. As Sophie is helping to hide Grace, she bumps into a photographer, James, and sparks fly.

It was a second-chance romance, a story of female friendship, and it was fantastic. It’s hard for me to figure out which character I loved the most – possibly Grace herself. Just know that Grace is more of a minor character in the story. I listened to parts of it on audiobook as well, and I can recommend that one too! Gifted by Harper Collins

The setting and the easy-to-understand magical elements reminded me of Bridgerton and Rose Bargain. It’s a great escapist read and sets up the next book in the series perfectly.

Lucy Hua is from a long line of women whose magical perfumes have been used by emperors to make fortunes. Every fifth generation, the eldest daughter is born with the rarest gift: enabling the wearer to find their true love. Lucy is that rare fifth-generation daughter, but it seems the magic has failed her.

Lucy leaves Vancouver for Toronto in an attempt to escape the stress of her failed magic, her overwhelming mother, and the pressure.

Ten years later, Lucy is called back home when her grandmother dies, and she is entrusted with the Hua family register. She must embrace her future by learning from her ancestors, including her mother.

This is such an unexpected book. The descriptions of the perfumes were so delectable, I wanted to find Lucy’s shop and have her make a perfume for me. I loved how Lucy slowly learned to embrace herself and her feelings. #gifted from Sourcebooks
