Books With a Name in the Title
Kirsten and I thought it would be so much fun to make a list of books with a name in the title. It is so much fun to look at a list of books with nothing in common except the title!

So many of my favorite books this year were books with names in the title, Kirsten and I thought it would be so much fun to make this into a reading challenge prompt. I divided the books by genre so that you can find a book that you love. But this is NOT the definitive list. There are so many books that we could have put; it was hard to narrow it down.
Over the past few years, we have had a great time with this theme of titles. We created Books With Numbers in the Title, Books With Flowers in the Title, and Books With Secret in the Title, to name a few. These are some of my favorite lists. Is there something that you want to see? Let Kirsten and I know.

I was consumed by this book from the opening scene on the airplane to Ireland. Saoirse’s life was harrowing and traumatic, and watching her come into her own was deeply moving. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine
Author: Gail Honeyman
Year: 2017
Genre: Fiction
More info: June 2107 Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick
Age Range: 14+
Plot
I wasn’t sure how I felt about this contemporary fiction book initially. Initially, Eleanor’s behavior and responses to people and situations upset me. I had the outside perspective of a reader to understand how Eleanor is misinterpreting situations. She is not supposed to be likable initially which is why I persevered and ended up loving the book and Eleanor.
Eleanor has difficulty with social skills and is used to being alone until one day, she saves an elderly man who has fallen with the help of Raymond from her work. The three develop a friendship that helps Eleanor heal.

Why Kirsten loves it
If you love a character-driven novel, this is the book for you. Eleanor changes so much from the beginning of the story to the end, I loved taking the journey with her.

Ove is mourning the loss of his wife and is consumed with grief. He decided to end his life. His attempts are foiled by mishaps and interruptions from his new neighbors. While this sounds like a depressing book, I laughed out loud while reading it.
Mr. Backman has a beautiful way of capturing the reader’s interest with wonderful characters who find themselves in hilarious situations. But, this story is so much more than that. As it progresses, Ove is able to have a profound impact on the life of everyone he meets, and at its heart, it is a book about friendship.
But don’t let the description throw you off. At its heart, this is one of the best feel-good books and one of my all-time favorite books! If you have not read it, you should consider it for your book club.

Grief
Why Kirsten loves it
I’m a sucker for a multi-generation novel to begin with, but add in layers of food, romance, and finding yourself, and you know I’m gonna dive right in. But this book is more than the sum of its parts in a way I can’t quite explain. I adore it.
I was rooting for all of the Graces, charmed by their eccentricities, delighted in their triumphs, and I was shattered by their sorrows. I wanted to dine with the Graces to hear their stories firsthand and watch their banter come to life. I’m PRAYING we get an adaptation of this story because I want it to come to life even more than it already is in my brain.
I’m so excited to talk with Elizabeth for our book club. I can’t wait to dive into her brain and find out the inspiration behind this story. Gifted by Atria and Simon Audio.

Her assistant on the trip is a very unlikely companion named Enid. With her bright clothes, blond hair, and huge personality, she is the opposite of Miss Benson in every way.
Why Jackie loves it
Oh, how I loved this book. I have never read anything like this before. This story is touching, endearing, funny, and, at times, sad. It will leave you wondering why a beetle expedition isn’t a more popular subject for books. Rachel Joyce is a wonderful writer, and this book did not disappoint.

The book is laid out like a VH1 Behind the Music style interview. It’s laid out in chronological order about the making of the band Daisy Jones & the Six, but the story is told in interview style from a dozen sources.
It’s a story about the music scene of the 1970s in Hollywood when the band The Six meets Daisy Jones and together they rocket to superstardom! Among the drama of touring, there is also a forbidden love story or two, and plenty of crazy parties!
It’s truly the perfect mix of historical fiction, romance, and rock ‘n’ roll.

The Netflix book adaptation stars Lily James and it reignited this popular thriller book’s success. If you have not read this book, it is a perfect book for fall.
Why Kirsten loves it
One of the most acclaimed psychological thriller authors, Daphne Du Maurier is at her best in this chilling psychological thriller. Everything about this gothic thriller will make you feel a little bit uncomfortable. I love Du Maurier and I have read this classic more than once.
Why Jackie loves it
I was at least 50 pages into this book when I called Kirsten and asked if I would ever learn the new Mrs. De Winter’s name. The fact that the main character remains nameless throughout the book adds to the thrill of the book. It is a classic that everyone should read at least once.

Plot
Jane Eyre is the classic story of a young woman sent to be a governess and teacher to a wealthy man’s daughter out in the countryside at Thornfield Hall. An orphan with a rough upbringing, she is overwhelmed by the rules and customs of Thornfield Hall and her mercurial employer, Rochester.
This novel was revolutionary at the time because it was written in first person – one of the first books to do so.
Trigger Warnings
Child Abuse, Mental Illness
Kirsten’s Thoughts
I have a love-hate relationship with this story. When I was younger, I saw the original Broadway musical production of it, and while the rest of my family hated it, I bought the CD and listened to it on repeat. (Ask me if I just put it on while writing this review)
However, when I recently reread this book as a woman in a healthy marriage, all I saw were red flags! I wanted to scream at Jane and tell her to run far, far away from Rochester.

Plot
Emma has never been a favorite of mine. In fact, the only version of Emma in book or movie form I’ve liked is Clueless. This time, however, I finally started to understand Emma. She is a matchmaker of sorts who finds her way into everyone’s business. The fact that she does not need to marry for financial security makes her very different from other women of the day.
Why Kirsten likes it
I’ve read Emma a few times already, but this time I actually listened to the Audible production narrated by Emma Thompson in anticipation of the upcoming movie adaptation. This recording made the book even better! But it’s still my least favorite Jane Austen book.

Plot
Romeo and Juliet is usually covered during the high school years, but if you haven’t learned about this classic book, you need to read it!
Shakespeare’s beloved story is a tragic romance set in Verona, Italy. It’s about the children of two warring families, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who start meeting in secret away from their parents’ machinations.
In their attempt at finding a life together, tragedy strikes. This is the original star-crossed lovers story.
Trigger Warnings

Why Kirsten loves it
It is a classic for a reason. I read it in school, and it’s crazy to think that Juliet was supposed to be 13-years-old.
Why Jackie loves it
This play has a new meaning as an adult. I cannot believe how young Romeo and Juliet were. I have a new appreciation for this book after seeing the Broadway play, & Juliet.

The Great Gatsby

Plot
Are you a fan of Rose’s storyline from Downton Abbey? Well, our swinging-dancing, jazz-loving, rebellious debutante would be perfectly happy inside Fitzgerald’s famed novel.
The book might take place in America, but the same ideas of the class divide and resistance to change in the most opulent of settings could be felt in England too.
Trigger Warnings
Racism, Antisemitism, Classism
Why Kirsten loves it
Daisy and Gatsby’s story still seems so relevant today too. This tragic love story is a classic for a reason.

I was immediately drawn to Anne upon first reading this story. She is smart, precocious, and has a way of making everyone love her while simultaneously finding new ways to get into trouble.
Anne is an orphan sent to live with siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who wanted a male orphan to help them on the farm. Anne was sent to them instead. She is bright, loquacious, and wins their hearts.
Why Kirsten loves it
I cherish this entire book series and the TV miniseries inspired by it. I vividly remember watching Megan Follows as Anne, completely transfixed. I was so enamored that I remember asking my grandmother to get me the books to read!

This is one of my all-time favorite books. Something is comforting about this cozy book that makes me read it repeatedly. It is a beautiful book about friendship and found family. Because of this book, I hope to visit Prince Edward Island one day.

Age Range: 8+ (note that some of the later books in the series may not be appropriate until a bit older)
Plot
I was in university when this book was published and the first four were sitting on my younger brother’s bookshelf before I picked it up to see what the fuss was about. I read all four books in as many days and was married with a child before the final book was published.
This story introduces us to Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger; our fearless trio. We also meet the other favorite beloved and detested characters that make the Harry Potter book series so special. After all, what would Hogwarts be without Hagrid, Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, Professor Snape, and Draco Malfoy?
Trigger Warnings
Parental death
Why Jackie loves it
I firmly believe that JK Rowling changed children’s literature more profoundly than any other author. I realize that this is a very strong statement. But, until her, there have never been books that have had such an impact on the world of reading. The books are so brilliantly laid out with easter eggs in book one that are essential for the entire plot. I believe this is one of the best fantasy series ever written.
Why Kirsten loves it
In my opinion, this is the best children’s fantasy series ever written. It features strong lessons on morality, inventive plotlines, and hidden threads woven throughout the entire series. Jim Dale’s audiobook narration of this book is award-winning. He voices over 200 characters, each with distinct accents and my kids have listened to the entire series multiple times.
Adaptations
While this beloved series has already been made into an 8 movie series starring Daniel Ratcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, Warner Brothers is currently turning into a TV series as well.

I DEVOURED this contemporary fiction story of a billionaire music mogul who releases her death announcement 2 days early so she can read her own end-of-life articles. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Author: Taylor Jenkins Reid
Year: 2017
Genre: Historical Fiction
Spice Rating:💋💋
Age Range: 16+
Plot
A tell-all about a fictional Elizabeth Taylor-
Evelyn Hugo has asked an unknown reporter, Monique Grant, to write her life story in a no-holds-barred book. There is a bit of mystery around why Monique was chosen and Evelyn certainly has her fair share of hardships as she claws her way to the top.
The drama and suffering add dimension to the story that makes it so much more than fluff, though the inner workings of Hollywood were fun to read too. The story seems so candid that I forgot that Evelyn Hugo was not a real celebrity.

Taylor Jenkins Reid slays with this story finding the perfect balance of glamour and grit. Evelyn seeks to change her life and in doing so, changes for the better. Every person who has read this book at my recommendation has loved it

Expert Tip
Reading challenges are more fun (and easier to finish) with company. In the Beyond the Bookends Book Club, we read one book together each month, share our thoughts, and then hear the story behind the story straight from the author. Plus, the book is already picked for you, so there is one less decision to make. If you would love a few reading friends for your 2027 reading challenge, we’d be happy to have you.
