Books Set on a Train
Ever since Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express, trains have become popular settings for novels. After The Girl on the Train became a hit and was later adapted, it became clear that books set on a train could be juggernauts of success if done correctly.

When perusing my own read book list, I realized I too have a thing for novels set on modes of transportation. I’ve already tackled boat books and plane books, so train novels made sense to tackle next. It’s actually surprising how many books set on a train that Jackie and I have read!
Below you will find all of the very best books set on trains divided by genre, so no matter what kind of reader you are, you’ll have some options!

Why Kirsten loves it
This is a thriller that is unexpected and original. The unreliable narrator is one of my favorite thriller tropes and Hawkins did it to perfection in this book.

The Main Character
Author: Jaclyn Goldis
Year: 2024
Genre: Mystery
More info: Bestselling Thriller
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Age Range:
Plot
This book had me at Orient Express. Within it, Rory has been sent on a lavish trip to the Italian Riviera aboard the newly remodeled famous train. It’s her reward for being celebrated writer Ginevra Ex’s newest main character – the real-life person who inspires each of Ex’s novels.
But Rory is shocked to see her brother, her best friend, and her ex-fiance aboard as well – all at Ginevra’s expense. The story opens with one of them being murdered but who and by whom remains to be seen.
As the foursome read Ginevra’s new manuscript secrets unravel, but behind the scenes, Ginevra’s own past is catching up to her and just why she was drawn to Rory in the first place remained unanswered.
Why Kirsten loves it
While the who-dun-it mystery within Ginevra’s novel was so well executed and the suspense of who was killed kept me turning the pages, it was Ginevra’s storyline that intrigued me most.
I was enthralled by Russia’s history with the Jewish people, having been mostly unaware of the animosity there before this book, and was shocked to learn that element came from Goldis’s own family history!
Why Jackie loves it
The idea of a novel within a novel is always so much fun and this book was brilliantly executed. I was never sure was a coincidence and what was the next attempt at murder. This was a page-turner I could not put down.

Why Kirsten loves it
It’s more than just a murder mystery though, it also addresses domestic violence and rape – so please go in prepared if those are triggers for you. It’s kind of odd to put all those things in one book, but it works! #gifted

The Last Train to Key West
Author: Chanel Cleeton
Year: 2020
Genre: Historical Fiction
More info: The Cuba Saga #3
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Book 3 of the Perez family series was different from the rest, because there wasn’t a particularly big Cuban storyline. Instead, it’s the story of three women impacted by a fierce Hurricane that hit the Florida Keys.
One woman, Mirta Perez, is on her honeymoon, one is a local, and one is in the Keys to save her family fortune. Their lives intertwine throughout the disastrous holiday weekend.
Trigger Warnings
Domestic Abuse
Why Kirsten likes it
Well, I was not expecting this doozy of a book. Chanel Cleeton’s Cuba book series is wonderful, but this one left me with mixed feelings.
I love the Florida Keys setting of this story and the elements of the hurricane in this novel. I was not expecting the domestic abuse one woman experiences (I mention this as it might be a trigger for some,) and while I liked most of the plots, I wasn’t a fan of the mobster storyline. Still, it was a fun read for a stormy summer day at the beach.

Emergency Contact
Author: Lauren Layne and Anthony Ledonne
Year: 2o23
Genre: Christmas Romance
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Plot
What happens when hotshot attorney Katherine gets into a car accident before removing her ex-husband Tom’s name from her emergency contact list? A funny, charming story about her traveling with him in a blizzard during the lead-up to Christmas Eve so he can propose to his current girlfriend.
Along the way, they dissect their marriage, get into loads of funny scenarios, and generally leave mayhem in their wake.
Why Kirsten loves it
I read this Christmas romance in the middle of August and didn’t bat an eye. Yes, it take place at Christmas time, but traveling that time of year is more of a plot device to get them back together than a real holiday book. It’s a retelling of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and I adored seeing the similarities and differences.
