Antiheroine Novels

This year, I read a number of books that I loved with a clear antiheroine. These characters are flawed and should be unlikable, yet somehow, I was laughing out loud. I knew I needed to make a list of my favorite antiheroine novels

Antiheroine Novels

Antiheroines are characters that are morally ambiguous. They are not purely good or evil; rather, they lack some of the traditional heroic qualities. These characters are often flawed. They can be selfish and manipulative, with questionable personalities (think narcissistic).

Yet, somehow, these novels are compulsively readable. Books with morally gray female characters have been popular for over 100 years, since Jane Austen’s Emma was published in 1815. Since then, the unreliable narrator and con artists have become central to so many fantastic books.

I wanted to include strictly female characters for this post. These are characters I love to hate, or hate to love. This list is such a fun one for the 2027 reading challenge.

My Sister, The Serial Killer Book cover

Author: Oyinkan Braithwaite

Year: 2018

Genre: Contemporary Fiction

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 18+

Despite the title, this book is more literary fiction than anything else. Korede has to hide the secret that her gorgeous sister, Ayoola, is a serial dater who murders her many boyfriends.

When Ayoola sets her sights on the only man Korede fancies, Korede has to decide where her loyalties lie. More about the emotional bonds of sisters, the murder is just an undercurrent of the story forcing emotions to the surface of this book.

Easily one of the most unique books I’ve ever read. This debut was fabulous. It’s not a mystery/thriller so much as a look at the mind of a serial killer.

Vladimir Book Cover

Author: Julia May Jonas

Year: 2022

Genre: Literary Fiction

Spice Rating:💋💋💋

Age Range: 18+

When it comes to books with stalkers, this literary fiction has a vibe of its own. Vladimir is the hot new professor at a rural college. A recent literary success, he quickly becomes the obsession of a 58-year-old tenured female professor at the same school.

Said professor is our narrator and her inner dialogue was expertly crafted. She’s on the edge of scandal after her husband is accused of multiple affairs with students before those types of relationships are banned. She knew about these affairs and even had some of her own, but she didn’t want to be caught up in the fallout. Instead, she fixates on Vladimir, a man 20 years her junior.

The subjects this novel explores are expertly navigated by Jonas, whose gifts as a writer shines in this debut. I would love to discuss this pick with my book club!

Clo wants nothing more than to rise to from intern to Editor at the illustrious fashion magazine she works for. But Clo is a workhorse in a world built for show ponies, so she decides to manipulate and scheme her way to the top with trusted allies and frenemies. This insider look at the time when fashion magazines were being surpassed by digital media is equally insightful and entertaining.

It’s clear Palmer put her extensive knowledge of the fashion and magazine industries, and the people that work in them, into this story. It was an elevated version of The Devil Wears Prada that was irresistible. Still, it was a touch too long and I sort of lost interest when the plot left the fashion world and swapped to Clo’s bad choices.

This book immediately caught my attention and I loved it.  This is a love story between Leo and Mathilde told first from the point of view of Leo and then from the point of view of Mathilde.

However, it isn’t repetitive at all and offers surprises at every turn.  It is believable, emotional, and just a tad bit crazy which is good in my books!!

I love how the stories told from the two perspectives were completely different. It was like reading two completely separate books!

I loved the nonlinear storytelling in this book. Rather than tell the story from two narrators at the same time, the novel starts over and tells the story again from another perspective.

The Medici family makes an appearance in the book which was a pleasant surprise, but really Caterina’s life story is compelling on its own. She was a fierce woman who skillfully navigated the tumultuous political climate of the time. She went up against Pope Borgia and other leaders and defied them all.

Her story is told through the eyes of her lady’s maid, and half-sister, who made an interesting storyteller. I wish that it had been told from Caterina’s point of view though.

After finishing my binge-watching of Netflix’s The Medici: Masters of Florence, I was on the hunt to read a good historical fiction set in Renaissance Italy. I can not believe how few books were written about this time period. How is that possible? Luckily, I did stumble upon this tale of badass warrior duchess Caterina Sforza. It is one of my favorite books set in Italy.

A Good Person Book Cover

Genre: Literary Thriller

Age Range: 18+

Lillian and Henry have been having a fling, which Lillian would like to become a relationship. She is determined to make Henry fall in love with her. But when he unexpectedly breaks up with her instead, she performs a hex on him to bring him back. When he is found dead, she becomes the prime suspect in his murder. She also discovers that he had a long-term girlfriend. Lillian is determined to take her place as the morning girlfriend, but the consequences might be more than she bargained for.

I almost DNFed this one because Lillian’s internal monologue is so unhinged but I ended up giving it 5 stars! Being in Lillian’s mind was a trip and a half, and once I got into her voice, I couldn’t stop reading it. Watching her try to clear her name while doing one wild thing after the other was so entertaining, but it was King’s writing talent that kept me turning the pages. I didn’t see the ending coming at all – and when I turned the final page, I was sad my time with Lillian had come to a close. #gifted by Putnam

Dating Game Book Cover

Author: Ally Zetterberg

Year: 2026

Spice Rating:💋💋

Age Range: 16+

Tilda is a neurodivergent board game creator who is trying to use her game-making skills to understand the world around her. She creates games for herself to make friends and date – but the dating game has a bit of a deadly twist to it – when she’s done with a date, she wipes him off the board – literally.

While she’s trying to find love and friendship, she’s inadvertently playing a game of cat and mouse with a man who is stalking her for a previous misdeed. More campy suspense than serious suspense, this is a story for a lighthearted thrill.

Is it weird to laugh at a thriller? Because I did laugh even at times when I was on edge. This is not the book for people who don’t enjoy antiheroes, but I love to be in the mind of someone whose brain works in an entirely different way than mine. If you are looking for a fun story set in Monaco, this is the summer thriller for you! Gifted by Berkley.

This is a psychological thriller book that almost everyone had heard of when it became a hit movie. It is the perfect example of what happens when a marriage goes terribly wrong. You will be questioning this book from the first page to the last.

On her fifth wedding anniversary, Amy Dunne mysteriously disappears. At the top of the suspect list is her husband Nick who seems perfect to the outside world. But, Nick and Amy are not who they appear to be.

There are so many twists and turns in this book that is the epitome of a domestic thriller and, if you love unreliable narrator books, this one is right up your alley. You may end up hating the characters, but this is one of the most popular thriller books ever written.

This is such a great psychological thriller. I never knew what was going to happen and it kept me turning the pages to see how this thriller would end.

This is another book where I loved to hate both Nick and Amy. They are both despicable which adds to the fun of this book

This dual timeline story is set in the Blue Ridge Mountains at a sprawling, secluded mountain estate. The present-day story features the heir’s return with his wife to the town and the dysfunctional, toxic family he left behind to put his late mother’s affairs in order and repair the house.

Interspersed throughout the story are letters written by his mother, Ruby. Widowed 4 times over, she was known as Mrs. Kill-More by the end of her life. Within the pages of the letters, she reveals the courtship, marriage, and deaths of each of her husbands, as well as multiple family secrets. It’s glamorous and dark all at the same time.

Hawkins weaves a masterful story with twisted, flawed characters that I couldn’t put down. The secrets kept unfurling until the very last page. This is my favorite book of hers yet!

This funny mystery is all about Lalla, a woman trying to do it all – help her husband make partner, get her daughter into an exclusive private school, secure her dream home, and host a damn-good birthday party for her 4-year-old. All of which hits a snag when she murders a thief attempting to break into her house, and kinda likes it. Now she needs to frame a friend, dispose of a body, and figure out how to hide her past from the police.

I love to root for an anti-hero, and Lalla is the perfect one! Lalla’s unique inner monologue made for delightful reading, and the increasingly fraught scenarios were humorous and suspenseful at the same time! Everyone knows the Wicked Witch of the West but not everyone knows how she became that way. She wasn’t always bad. This is the story of a girl who would grow up to become one of the most hated villains in history. Elphaba is born with green skin and is treated with superstition and dislike. When she enters Shiz University, she is eventually able to make friends

When Elphaba realizes that Animals are threatened with exile, she tries to protect them. After all, they have voices, minds, thoughts, and opinions too. Soon she finds herself in a war with the mysterious wizard.

I think of Professor Snape from Harry Potter in the same way. If you love witches and rooting for the bad guys, this book is for you. Like the Broadway play, the movie adaptation of this will be a must-see.

I grew up watching The Wizard of Oz and could not imagine the Wicked Witch of the West as anything else, until I read this book. This is a brilliantly written book that shows there are always two sides to the story. This is a message that is so strong and remains relevant in our society.

Thank goodness Hogwarts is nothing like this school. There is not a single first year that would survive. This magic school, The Scholomance, is bursting with magic that is very dark and unforgiving.

Losing a few classmates is nothing surprising. You either graduate or die. If you love the dark side of Harry Potter, you will love this YA fantasy book.

El, along with all other magical children are sent to the Schoolomnace because even though there is a chance they will die inside, they will almost certainly be killed on the outside. There are no holidays and no packages from home. El isn’t exactly worried because she has powers that make her the most dangerous thing inside the walls.

But Orion Lake keeps saving her life and she cannot understand why. All she knows is that she is supposed to stay away from him.

I loved how dark and disturbing this book is while somehow also being fun. It seems like an oxymoron. El has abilities that make her one of the most dangerous people on the planter; yet, she chooses kindness. I loved all three books in this series.

This fantastic story is about Katrina Shaw’s rise to the Olympics alongside her ice dance partner, and sometimes boyfriend, Heath Rocha. It’s told in a multi-narrator documentary style reminiscent of Daisy Jones & The Six.

It starts when Katrina is a motherless 10-year-old girl, captivated by Sheila Lin, an Olympic Gold Medalist. Heath is a foster child, enamored by Kat and willing to do anything to be in her orbit – including becoming her ice dance partner.

When their chemistry and technique capture the attention of Sheila and her twins, they begin to train at her facility – a dream for Katrina. But Kat’s drive for gold threatens her relationship with Heath.

Inspired by Wuthering Heights, this retelling is epic in scope and creative in execution. The secondary characters (particularly the Lins) are each as fascinating as the main protagonists, and being able to hear from them as narrators really enhances the story.

There is love, passion, betrayal, death, breakdowns, comebacks, rebellion, and so much more in this riveting story. The book (I recommend consuming it on audio) captured my attention and never let me go.

This one is going to be a massive hit, and it’s well-deserved. Now, who is gonna buy the series rights? Cause I’m ready to see it on the screen.

Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare’s most well-known works. When three witches tell Macbeth (a Scottish general) that he will be king, Macbeth makes sure this comes to pass by killing the king himself.

Soon, Macbeth is paranoid and begins to kill more people in order to remain the reigning king. Obviously, this is a very simplified version of the story but, all the death and destruction begins with the prophecy of three witches. This classic is a must for any list of books about witches.

I adored this mystery novel set during the 11 days of Agatha Christie’s disappearance. It’s told from the perspective of Christie’s husband’s mistress and it is utterly absorbing.

This biographical fiction novel is totally fictional because there is no account of what actually happened to Agatha Christie during her missing days. There are layers of mystery throughout, with a side of a love story.

I never felt I would be able to sympathize with a mistress but I was cheering for her by the end. I was also enchanted by the setting of the small hotel. If you love historical mystery books, this is a must-read.

It depicted the rise and fall of Lady Tremaine’s fortunes and the reasoning behind many of her decisions.

While this story is devoid of magic, the dark themes explored included what parents will sacrifice for their children, corruption of power, and the darker side of aristocratic life.

Sexual Assault

First of all, I love a villain retelling because the story is always so different when told from the bad guy’s perspective, and Lady Tremaine had me firmly on her side the entire time. I adored how dark this version of Cinderella got. It was incredibly thought-provoking to have the story told and examined with the darker plot twists. It was an enjoyable listen, and the audiobook narrator brought the story to life. #Gifted by MacMillan Audio

I found this stalker book to be enjoyable if only because of the plotting of Amber Patterson. I adored being in the head of the villain.

I read this popular thriller book because it was a Reese Witherspoon pick AND because I heard wonderful things about it. I had read another thriller in January so I completely predicted what was going to happen in this book. As with all thrillers, especially domestic thrillers, when the element of surprise is missing, it’s not as good a read. Still, if you are looking for a very readable psychological thriller book, this is a great pick.

J-Lo is attached to this project which started filming in the fall of 2025. Jennifer Lopez and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star in the Netflix movie with Robert Zemeckis directing.

Evie Porter knows the rules for survival: the first lie wins. Her mysterious boss, Mr. Smith, will first send her a name and then a location. She gets one piece of information at a time and is never sure what the end game is. She knows that she owes Mr. Smithe everything.

This time, her mark is Ryan Summer. But she is starting to feel like there might be something real with him. But, she cannot make any more mistakes. She is already on thin ice because of how she screwed up her last job. Soon, she is following twisted pathway and is not sure who to trust. Can she even trust herself?

This is unlike any thriller I have read. It is not a murder mystery thriller, but rather a fast-paced, secret-identity thriller where you will feel like you are one step behind the entire book. I listened to this on a road trip with my husband he loved it as much as I did. #gifted

Athena Liu is a literary star whose books are immediate best sellers. June Hayward went to school with Athena and thought she would be a star as well. However, she has found herself in literary obscurity.

One night, June and Athena are hanging out in Athena’s apartment when Athena dies in a freak accident (Content warning for graphic detail of choking). When June arrives home, she realizes she has Athena’s new unfinished, unpublished manuscript in her bag about the contributions of Chinese laborers during World War I.

June decides that she will finish the manuscript and send it to her agent as her own work. She also lets them rebrand her as Juniper Song

There is so much to talk about in this book, from obvious cultural appropriation and racism to secrets, lies, and entitlement.

These are the key characteristics of antiheroines

  • Antiheroines are characters that are morally ambiguous. They are not purely good or evil; rather, they lack some of the traditional heroic qualities. These characters are often flawed. They can be selfish and manipulative, with questionable personalities (think narcissistic).

Reading challenges are more fun (and easier to finish) with company. In the Beyond the Bookends Book Club, we read one book together each month, share our thoughts, and then hear the story behind the story straight from the author. Plus, the book is already picked for you, so there is one less decision to make. If you would love a few reading friends for your 2027 reading challenge, we’d be happy to have you.

What is an antiheroine book?

An antiheroine book is a book with a morally gray female character. These characters are flawed. They can be cynical, narcissistic, and mentally complex, while lacking selflessness and other qualities of a traditional hero. You can think of a revenge story or someone doing bad things for good reasons.

What is the difference between an antiheroine and a villain?

An antiheroine does not have evil intentions. A Villain’s intentions are chaos and destruction. The villain and the antiheroine have different roles in a story. The antiheroine is the story’s protagonist, and the villain is the antagonist who works against her.

What is the difference between an antiheroine and an unlikeable narrator?

An unlikeable character is simply a character that you don’t like for any number of reasons. An Antiheroine is someone who is morally grey, but there is no guarantee that you will not like them as a character.

What are the best books with an antiheroine?

There are so many fantasic antiheroine books, but these are some of my favorites:

A Good Person by Kirsten King
A Serial Killer’s Guide to Marriage by Asia Mackay
Wicked by Gregory Maguire
The Favorites by Layne Fargo
Emma by Jane Austen
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tinterra

Who are the most famous antiheroines in literature?

Emma by Jane Austen is one of the most famous antiheroines. She is flawed and nosy, yet she has become the quintessential antiheroine. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth, the most famous antiheroine, is probably the original. Other famous antiheroines include Amu Dunne from Gone Girl.

What are the best thrillers with an antiheroine?

A Good Person by Kirsten King
The Dating Game by Ally Zetterberg

Jackie and I both love Wicked by Gregory Maguire. Elphaba is the perfect antiheroine. El from Deadly Education by Naomi Novik is an antiheroine from a fantasy that Jackie loves.

What classic books have an antiheroine?

Emma by Jane Austen and Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell are classics with great antiheroines!

Are there romance books with an antiheroine?

Yes! Romance books with antiheroines are so much fun. You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle is a great example of a romance with a morally gray female character.

What counts as an antiheroine book for a reading challenge?

If you are choosing an antiheroine novel from this list for a reading challenge, any book will count. If you have another book that is not on the list, choose it and let us know what you chose! An antiheroine book will have a female main character who is morally ambiguous. Think of The Count of Monte Cristo, completely motivated by revenge, but female.

Is Amy Dunne from Gone Girl an antiheroine or a villain?

Amy Dunne from Gone Girl is an antiheroine. She is the protagonist for part of the story, which means she cannot be the villain. She is also not evil, but is selfish and self-centered. While some consider her the villain in the story, Jackie and I think of her as a particularly morally inept antiheroine.

Why do readers love a morally gray female character?

It is so easy to love a character who is deeply flawed and in a situation you would never find yourself in. It is almost the equivalent of a fantasy because the likelihood of any of that happening is almost nothing. Reading about a flawed character can often be so outrageous that there is some humor as well.
Some antiheroes also dole out vigilante justice. I am a huge fan of these plot lines as well.
