GMA Book Club List 2024

The GMA Book Club List 2024 is a complete list of the Good Morning America Book Club picks for 2024. I wanted to make this list to see how the book choices change and evolve from year to year. I have been a fan of GMA for a long time, but I sometimes get confused about which book was released when. To keep it straight, I wanted to divide the full list by year and give reviews for the books that Kirsten and I have read.

GMA Book Club List 2024

Kirsten and I read a lot of books, especially celebrity book club picks. We often get spoilers in advance, so we have the opportunity to read the book before the release dates. We want to ensure that we are reading the best books so we can give you the best recommendations. I also have the complete Good Morning America Book Club List.

Whether you are reading the book for yourself or to read with a book club, picking your next book can be difficult. I hope this list helps give you some great ideas of what to read next. The GMA Book Club chooses a wide variety of books. You will find everything from YA fantasy to thrillers and historical fiction. Kirsten and I consistently love the GMA book club picks.

Come and Get it 1

Author: Kiley Reid

Genre: Literary Fiction

Age Range: 18+

Millie Cousins is a senior resident assistant at the University of Arkansas in 2017. Agatha Paul is a visiting professor and writer who has left her wife at home and taken a position for a year. They meet when Agatha comes to the dorm to interview students about weddings as research for her next book.

This meeting creates an opportunity for Millie she cannot resist until an accident from a prank gone wrong threatens to ruin everything for Millie.

Animal death, Suicidal Thoughts

Reid’s sophomore novel has a cast of characters that fell a little flat for me. The beginning chapters about Agatha and Millie are promising but ultimately, didn’t fulfill my expectations. The other characters like Tyler, Casey, and Peyton seem to fit stereotypes rather than dynamic characters.

Kiley Reid tackled many subjects in this book such as racism and socioeconomic status all while having LGBTQ representation in a college setting. I appreciate what the author tried to accomplish in this character-driven novel but for me, it didn’t quite hit the mark. I look forward to more from this talented writer. #gifted

2024 is the year of the thriller and this one doesn’t disappoint! Lucy is returning to her hometown for the first time since she was accused, but never charged, with murdering her best friend Savvy 5 years ago.

She has no memories of the night Savvy died, but she needs answers for herself. So she decides to team up with true crime podcaster, Ben Owens, to discover the truth – even if she’s implicated in the process.

Ben is real-time podcasting the whole investigation and his interviews are interspersed between chapters, revealing new insights each time.

Domestic Abuse, murder

This is one mystery/thriller that is even better in audiobook format! The background noises and interviews bring the podcast to life. #gifted by Macmillan Audio

I felt like I was in the story investigating it myself. I can’t emphasis enough that this one is best consumed by listening. Like Jackie noted, the audiobook adds elements not available in print. I will say I couldn’t figure out the ending on this one and was completely surprised by who committed the murder!

Just for the Summer

Author: Abby Jimenez

Year: 2024

Genre: Romance

More info: April 2024 GMA Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋💋💋💋

Age Range: 18+

The premise of this story is rather straightforward and sweet – Justin and Emma discover they both have a “curse” where people immediately find their soul mate AFTER dating them. To find their own happily ever afters, they decide to date each other and then break up.

Sounds fun and light, right? But it’s so much more! Each of them is going through some very serious family drama which adds intimacy and drama immediately to their relationship. Their relationships with the secondary characters also made my heart soar. The representations of friendship, family bonds, and found family really tugged at my heart.

Depression

The romance!! Omg the butterflies this story gave me. Justin and Emma’s relationship may be my favorite romance ever. The way they supported each other, cared for one another, and loved each other was perfection.

The Ministry of Time

Author: Kailiane Bradley

Year: 2024

Genre: Sci-Fi

More info: May 2024 Good Morning America Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 18+

In the not-so-distant future, a civil servant begins working with a new government ministry that gathers “expats” from across history to try to establish a time travel program. Her job is a “bridge” to help the expats adapt to the new time they are living in. She is supposed to help Commander Graham Gore, known as 1847. In history, he died in an Arctic expedition. In the history books, the commander died on Sir John Franklin’s doomed 1845 expedition to the Arctic.

Initially, all the expats are a little disoriented. The commander is especially concerned about an unmarried woman who wears pants. Over the next year, as the expats adapt, the real reasoning of the program becomes clear.

The premise of this book was right up my alley. I usually love GMA book picks, so I was surprised that this book didn’t resonate with me. The plot moved a little slowly through the middle and I had a hard time picking it back up.

malas

Author: Marcela Fuentes

Year: 2024

Genre: Literary Fiction

Age Range: 18+

Laid out as a dual-timeline story, this novel tells the tale of Pilar and Lulu, weaving their story together marvelously. In 1951 Pilar is told by a stranger that her husband is already married, changing the course of her marriage forever. In the present day, Lulu is getting ready for her quinceañera but with her grandmother recently deceased and her father a mess, she doesn’t know who to turn to for help.

Soon, Lulu strikes up an unlikely friendship with Pilar. As Lulu struggles to find her way into adulthood and navigate her strict dad’s rules, Pilar willingly shares her wisdom and helps guide her into womanhood.

Child death, Alcoholism

I was eager to pick up this story because I’m often drawn to character-driven stories. I enjoyed learning about the culture and norms around a quinceañera, a 15th birthday party popular in the Latino community to mark the coming-of-age milestone. I was also swept into the intergenerational trauma that makes books like this sing. If you enjoy a family saga, this is a great pick!

Love of my afterlife

Author: Kirsty Greenwood

Year: 2024

Genre: Fantasy Romance

More info: July 2024 GMA Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋💋

Age Range: 18+

Delphie has just died and is in her pj’s in the afterlife when she meets the man of her dreams. Her hilarious afterlife therapist, Merit, is obsessed with all things romance so she gives her the chance to return to her life with the caveat that she has ten days to find this mysterious man and get him to kiss her.

That would be easy except for the fact that she does not know his last name and cannot seem to find him anywhere. Even worse, her therapist seems to be hindering her progress rather than helping. Delphie reluctantly asks her grumpy downstairs neighbor to help her. Soon, Delphie is making friends, loving life, and regretting shutting everyone out her whole life.

Delphie reminds me of a more loveable Eleanor Oliphant. Thanks to the love-obsessed afterlife therapist, this book is one part love triangle mixed with a little bit of forced proximity, and a whole lot of laugh-out-loud rom-com!

The Seventh Veil of Salome

Author: Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Year: 2024

Genre: Historical Fiction

More info: August 2024 Good Morning America Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 18+

This historical fiction is set in the 1950s, during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Princess Salome is the stepdaughter of Herod and the subject of the biggest movie in Hollywood. Everyone knows that the actress who gets the part will be rocketed to stardom.

When Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican actress, gets the part, Nancy Harley will stop at nothing to make the part hers. Told by Vera, Nancy, and Salome, this story handles the racism, sexism, and unethical practices of the Hollywood machine.

Racism, Sexism, Sexual harassment

I loved the way the 1950s storylines intertwined with Salome’s story because of the parallels in each timeline. Vera was a particularly captivating character to read about as she became typecast, underappreciated, and mistreated by those around her. Nancy’s desperation, which bordered on delusion, felt palpable, and the way their stories connected in the end was fantastic.

Xishi lives in the village of Yue with her parents still mourning the loss of her beloved younger sister at the hands of the Wu warriors. Fanli is a military advisor to the king who recognizes that Xishi’s beauty can be used as a weapon to help infiltrate the enemy palace of Wu. She agrees so she can help the kingdom and avenge her sister’s murder.

He trains her in everything from dancing and etiquette to the art of seduction and sends her to the king. Her goal is to infiltrate the court and make the king fall in love with her. Once inside the palace, the king is drawn to her, and she rises through the court. But one mistake can bring the whole kingdom crashing down. She must strategize and navigate enemy territory without drawing any suspicion, or her punishment will be torture and then death.

This book is Inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the famous Four Beauties of Ancient China which is why it is included in the fantasy category. Those looking for magic and world-building will not find it in this book, but it remains a 5-star read and one of the best new fantasy books of the year.

War, Death

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. The story is beautifully written. The plot pulled me in from the first page and was non-stop throughout the book. My heart felt the pain of Xishi’s loss and the anxiety of living a second life “undercover”. This story is heartwrenching and beautiful at the same time #gifted

The Blue Hour

Author: Paula Hawkins

Year: 2024

Genre: Thriller

More info: November 2024 Good Morning America Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:💋

Age Range: 16+

The book begins with the discovery of a human bone within a sculpture by the late artist Vanessa Chapman. Soon, an investigation begins (which is complicated by the fact that they will have to destroy art work to examine the bone). The story brings us to Eris, a secluded Scottish island, and weaves together the lives of three central characters: Grace Winters, Vanessa’s companion; James Becker, an art scholar; and Julian, Vanessa’s estranged ex-husband.

The novel is told in flashbacks and diary excerpts which makes the story more unique. And the isolated island definitely contributed to making the book feel a lot more creepy.

I love the idea of art in a thriller novel and Hawkins does a great job at pulling apart the relationships of the characters. This was not my favorite Paula Hawkins book- That would have to be “Girl on a Train”. But, this book is worth the read.

The Grandest Game

Genre: Young Adult Mystery

I listened to the book and could not believe it was done. There are two reasons, one is that the story is far from over but the second is that I was so invested in the story. I cannot believe I have to wait until the next book comes out.
