She is already on thin ice because of how she screwed up her last job. Soon, she is following twisted pathway and is not sure who to trust. Can she even trust herself?
Why Jackie loves it
This is unlike any thriller I have read. It is not a murder mystery thriller, but rather a fast-paced, secret-identity thriller where you will feel like you are one step behind the entire book. I listened to this on a road trip with my husband he loved it as much as I did. #gifted

The Most Fun We Ever Had
Author: Claire Lombardo
Year: 2019
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
More info: April 2024 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Lombardo’s debut is a tremendous contemporary fiction book about the complicated dynamics and hidden secrets of the Sorenson parents and their 4 daughters.
The story alternates between the present day and the past. In the current storyline, Jonah reunites with the daughter who gave him up 15 years prior. The flashbacks touch on moments in the Sorenson family history that are returning to haunt them.
Why Kirsten loves it
I’m a sucker for character-driven novels. Each of Lombardo’s characters is deliciously flawed and complex. She writes in a way that brings characters to life. I could have sworn I’d met them before.
Why Jackie loves it
I love that at the heart of the story, the book is about the many forms of love and how to live well. I cannot believe that Claire Lombardo is not a 50 or 60-year-old woman with children of her own.

Why Jackie likes it
I wanted this story to really sing, and while it had the makings of a great beach read, it was just a little off. I wanted their chemistry to sizzle on the page and instead it was at a slow boil the whole time.

Be transported to the coasts of Maine with this thought-provoking story of heritage and family lore. Reese’s most recent book club pick is a thought-provoking look at the cycles often repeated in families. When a disastrous night leads to Jane losing her husband and her job, she retreats to the only home she’s ever known – a small town in Maine.
There, she decides to clean out her recently deceased mother’s home while trying to figure out her next steps. When a new arrival asks her to research the history of a home she recently renovated, Jane goes digging into the lore of the house. Along the way, she finds out things about her family that tilts her world on its axis.
Trigger Warnings
Alcoholism, Colonisation, Racism, Death of a Child
Why Kirsten loves it
Halfway through the story, I switched to the audiobook which was wonderful as well. Between every few Jane chapters, other supporting characters get one chapter to give their perspective – and each is narrated by someone different.
I was fascinated by the history of the made-up town and I appreciated learning more about the original inhabitants, the indigenous people, and how they were treated and subsequently erased from the history of the area. Well researched, the story drew me in and held me until the end despite how much I wanted to throttle Jane at times. #gifted by Knopf

City of Night Birds
Author: Juhea Kim
Genre: Fiction
Release Date: November 26, 2024
More info: December 2024 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Plot
Natalia was one of the most celebrated dancers in the Russian ballet before an injury put her career on hold for two years. Now, she is returning to the ballet addicted to pills and alcohol to numb her pain. She’s been offered a roll she’s always coveted and she must decide whether she can rise to the challenge, and face her past and the people responsible for her highs and lows.
Why Kirsten likes it
I found the story to be interesting but I didn’t love any of the characters. I respected Natalia’s drive and talent but found her to be cold and distant. Similarly, the two men she is interwoven between felt one-dimensional. That technical side and mental resilience it takes to be a ballerina were wonderful to read, however.
