Eleanor Oliphant

Author: Gail Honeyman

Year: 2017

Genre: Fiction

More info: June 2107 Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick

Age Range: 14+

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this contemporary fiction book initially.  Initially, Eleanor’s behavior and responses to people and situations upset me. I had the outside perspective of a reader to understand how Eleanor is misinterpreting situations. She is not supposed to be likable initially which is why I persevered and ended up loving the book and Eleanor.

Eleanor has difficulty with social skills and is used to being alone until one day, she saves an elderly man who has fallen with the help of Raymond from her work. The three develop a friendship that helps Eleanor heal.

Loneliness

As we get to know Eleanor and understand her profound loneliness, it made me think about what initial judgments I make in other areas. Eleanor is able to find herself and understand herself in this wonderful, feel-good book.

If you love a character-driven novel, this is the book for you. Eleanor changes so much from the beginning of the story to the end, I loved taking the journey with her.

The Alice Network

Author: Kate Quinn

Year: 2017

Genre: Historical Fiction

More info: July 2017 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:đź’‹

Age Range: 16+

This historical fiction takes place during the First World War and after the Second World War as the story of two women come together.  One is a female ex-spy another is a pregnant single woman, and they are joined by a shady ex-con as they embark on a quest.

This was such a good book to listen to and although the subject matter was serious, there were moments when I was laughing out loud.  There was just the right amount of humor to make this a very readable book and a perfect book for book clubs to discuss.

This was such engaging historical fiction. I liked the characters and immediately wanted to know how the story would come together. It is a must-read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

Nobody in Shaker Heights was prepared when Mia, a single mother and artist, rents a house from the Richardsons. When friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, the town becomes divided and Mia and the Richardsons are on opposite sides.

Abortion, Miscarriage, Racism

I have mixed feelings about this family drama book about motherhood.  There was nothing I didn’t like.  It is a great story and is written well.  I think I was expecting to be completely blown away because of all the hype. Ng has depth to her characters and looks at highly emotional issues. I ended up really liking the book once I got past the beginning.

I love Alice Hoffman and I have read every book in this series. This one did not disappoint. I love that this book takes place one generation before Practical Magic.

The Last Mrs. Parrish

Author: Liv Constantine

Year: 2017

Genre: Thriller

More info: December 2017 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick

Spice Rating:đź’‹

Age Range: 16+

I found this stalker book to be enjoyable if only because of the plotting of Amber Patterson. I adored being in the head of the villain.

I read this popular thriller book because it was a Reese Witherspoon pick AND because I heard wonderful things about it. I had read another thriller in January so I completely predicted what was going to happen in this book. As with all thrillers, especially domestic thrillers, when the element of surprise is missing, it’s not as good a read. Still, if you are looking for a very readable psychological thriller book, this is a great pick.

    • If the description says “why I love it”, it’s a 4 or 5-star book.
    • If it says “why I like it”, it’s a 3-star book.
    • If it says “thoughts”, it was not a winner for Kirsten or me.
  • If you love a certain genre, pick a book from that genre as your next read.
