Books like Pride and Prejudice

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a female reader obsessed with the Regency era must be a Jane Austen fan. With all the modern book adaptations like Pride and Prejudice, it’s clear we all have a thing for Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy.

Books Like Pride and Prejudice

It really says something that Pride and Prejudice was chosen as the read with Jenna Book Club pick in December 2025, 250 years after Jane Austen was born. In fact, all of Jane Austen’s classics have been adapted, reworked, or rewritten for modern audiences.

Pride and Prejudice is a classic for a reason, and I never get sick of reading retellings. The themes in Pride and Prejudice are still relevant today. Love, marriage, and societal expectations are universal. The retellings I included on this list take these themes and familiar characters and expand on them.

Longbourn

Author: Jo Baker

Year: 2013

Genre: Historical Fiction

Age Range: 18+

I’m a sucker for a Jane Austen adaptation so I was eager to read this story about the servants at Longbourn, home to the Bennett sisters. It was a love story that definitely focused on the people behind the scenes, without many appearances by the famed characters of Pride and Prejudice.

I liked that we got a brief look into Elizabeth’s life as Mrs. Darcy, but I really did enjoy the servants’ stories.  I’d recommend this one for fans of Downton Abbey for sure.

My ladys choosing

Author: Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris

Year: 2018

Genre: Romance

Spice Rating:💋💋💋💋

Age Range: 18+

What is so great about this book is that it can go anywhere you want it to. Choose your adventure…and choose your own man. It’s exactly like those books we all loved as children, except with VERY adult content.😉

You can pick as many or as few stories as you want. Personally, I found my happy ending with a Scottish man who was clearly modeled after Jamie Frasier! This is a perfect pick for books like Briderton as well as books like Outlander. If you are looking for steamy romance novels set in Scotland, this is your pick.

Mr. Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy

This story picks up where Pride and Prejudice left off and continues the love story of Elizabeth Bennett and her beloved Mr. Darcy.

We get to see their wedding, their wedding night, their honeymoon, and even the birth of their first child.

I loved seeing Mrs. Darcy acclimate to life as the mistress of Pemberley.

Death Comes to Pemberley

Author: P. D. James

Year: 2011

Genre: Historical Mystery

Age Range: 16+

This story takes place a few years after Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy get married. While the Darcys are preparing for a ball, Lydia comes hurtling up the drive claiming that Wickham has been murdered. Soon the whole family, along with the Bingleys, are plunged into the investigation and its aftermath.

My favorite part about this story was getting to see Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage. Pride and Prejudice ends as they declare their love for one another, so it was nice to see how they had grown as a couple. I was not as engaged in the mystery element as I was expecting to be, but perhaps that’s because I was so interested in revisiting some of my favorite characters.

This Pride and Prejudice retelling is a murder mystery! In this version of the story, Mr. Bennett is a barrister and Lizzie is desperate to prove herself and be the first female barrister.

But while she offers to help Mr. Bingley find the real culprit of the murder he’s been accused of, she ends up butting heads with her rival, Mr. Darcy of Pemberley and Associates.

This delightful take on the classic story was a refreshing and fun book. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

National Book Award Finalist, Ibi Zoboi, has remixed the classic Austen favorite, Pride and Prejudice. In this version of the story, Zuri is proud of her family and her Brooklyn roots, but she’s not loving the gentrification of her neighborhood. She is not at all impressed with Darius and the rest of the rich Darcy family that’s moved in across the street. As her sister, Janae, begins to fall for Ainsley Darcy, Zuri and Darius’s paths continue to cross.

Racism

I’m always down for a classic retelling of Pride and Prejudice, one of my favorite books of all time. I was particularly interested in this take because it features modern, black teenagers. This was my first Austen retelling from a non-white author, though certainly more diverse retellings have come out since I read this one. I adored this version. Yes, I knew what would happen, but this is about the journey, people!!!

Bridget Joness Diary

I remember reading this contemporary fiction book shortly before it was turned into a hit movie starring Colin Firth and Renee Zellweger. This modern Pride and Prejudice retelling is told in diary form over the course of one year.

Hysterical and silly, Bridget’s antics are quite something. Mark and Daniel are deliciously brought to life via Bridget’s inner monologue. If you love the movie, try the book.

Bridget starts her diary on New Year’s Day which makes it a perfect pick for books about New Year’s!

I love Pride and Prejudice retellings and this is one of the best ones I have ever read. Even though it just had its 25th anniversary, it is still relevant and funny. The fact that it is written as a year of diary entries is icing on the cake!

I’m a sucker for a good Pride and Prejudice retelling. This particular one revolves around NBA basketball stars and their wives and girlfriends. In the beginning, it was fun to figure out which character matched up to Austen’s classic, but then the plot and characters definitely departed from the well-known text of the original.

It was a fun, and often over-the-top retelling, but don’t expect it to be accurate! It is so much fun to see modern interpretations of the classic novel.

This modern classic retelling of Pride and Prejudice had me giggling multiple times. The Bennett sisters get modern updates in all the best ways.

And in this one, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth have hate sex as part of the courting ritual, which just cracked me up. Mrs. Bennett’s hysterics remain true to form and will be sure to delight.

I love a retelling of Pride and Prejudice any day, but Sittenfeld makes the changes feel fresh and funny. This one had me laughing and smiling throughout.

Darcy Fitzwilliam is a workaholic, while Luke Bennett is the boy she grew up next to in their hometown of Pemberly, Ohio. When she and Luke spend the night together after her family’s annual Christmas party, she thinks it’s a one-night stand – but is it? As easy as it was to predict this Christmas romance story, there were a few surprises along the way.

I picked up this book because I adore Pride and Prejudice and all things Jane Austen. I saw the Hallmark version first, but be warned, the movie and the book are nothing alike!
