Best Newbery Award Winners
Middle Grade fiction is a genre of books written for the 8 to 12-year-old set. The creme de la creme of middle grade fiction can be recognized by the distinctive gold and silver medals on the cover, signalizing they are Newbery Award winners. Gold is for the Newbery Medal recipent, given to one book a year, while silver indicated a Newbery Honor recipient given to other distinguished new works in children’s literature.

I think Newbery Award winners are a perfect starting place for adults new to reading this genre because they have been honored for a reason. While written at a level appropriate for young kids, the stories can speak to all of us.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best Newbery Award Winners?
By definition, each of the books that have received a Newbery is fantastic. They have all won for a reason. But not all of them stand the test of time or reach icon status. I’d say the best Newbery award winners are those taught in school, like:
The Giver by Lois Lowry
Charlotte’s Web by Garth Williams
New Kid by Jerry Craft
The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
What is a Newbery Award winner?
A Newbery Award winner is a book that has received the Newbery Medal or has been chosen as a Newbery Honor book. Think of the Newbery Medal as gold and an Honor book as silver, which is how they are labeled on book covers. There is only one Newbery Medal winner each year, but there can be multiple Newbery Honor books chosen.
What is the Newbery Award?
The Newbery Medal is an award given to an American author for their outstanding contribution to children’s literature. It is awarded by the American Library Association (the ALA). Think of this as winning the gold metal in the Olympics of children’s books.
