- Who was your favorite character and why?
- At the beginning of the book, did you have any ideas as to why Rowan came to the island? Were you correct?
- This is also a book about grief. Each character deals with grief in their own way and it has shaped who they are. Have you experienced grief and if so, which character do you relate to the most?
- How do you think the isolation of living on Shearwater affected the Salts?
- How do you think The Salt family would have been different if they had grown up on the mainland?
- Why do you think Fen decided to burn her mother’s things?
- Hank went crazy trying to decide which seeds to save. Orly decided to save the seeds he found the most interesting. Who do you think was correct?
- Rowan survived a fire, the Salt’s survived the flooding of the island. What ten books would you save from a library if you knew it would be destroyed?
- Rowan thought Doms had killed Hank, yet she still developed close feelings for them. Can you understand her choices? Do you agree with her choices?
- Did you like the ending of the book? Do you think the ending was hopeful?
