February 2023 Celebrity Book Club Spoilers
Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club – February 2023 Celebrity Book Club Spoiler
Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club was really the first of the modern celebrity book clubs to catch on in recent years. Started in 2017, her list features thrillers, romances, historical fiction, YA, non-fiction, and modern fiction.
The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson
February 2023 Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
Sadeqa Johnson is back with a stunning historical fiction novel set in Philadelphia and D.C. during the 1950s. Ruby and Eleanor both fall in love with boys from outside their respective classes, but they have wildly different relationship outcomes.
Their relationships collide in an unexpected way at the end of the book, but before that, it felt like 2 stories in one. I liked the look at classicism and racial relationships in the 1950s. It was informative and entertaining, but I wish it didn’t feel like reading 2 books at once.

Read With Jenna Book Club – February 2023 Celebrity Book Club Spoiler
Jenna Bush Hager started her book club on the Today show back in the spring of 2019. They are often more literary than Reese’s picks and cover a variety of thought-provoking topics.
Maame
Author: Jessica George
Year: 2023
Genre: Literary Fiction
More info: February 2023 Read with Jenna Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
This story about Maddie, known as Maame to her family, was immersive and beautifully complex. Dealing with friendships, racism, familial obligations, and then grief, this story swept me away. Maddie lives in London as the primary caretaker of her father who has Parkinson’s. Her mother spends most of her time in Ghana.
Trigger Warnings
Death of parent, Grief, Mental illness
Why Kirsten loves it
I felt fiercely protective of Maddie while reading this book. There were times I wanted to swoop in to relieve some of the burdens of this wonderful character with a heart of gold. But it was more rewarding to see Maddie finding her inner strength and learning to prioritize herself and her dreams. I can’t recommend this coming-of-age book about grief enough – especially as a book for book clubs.

The Good Morning America Book Club – February 2023 Celebrity Book Club Spoiler
GMA’s answer to Read with Jenna was to host their own celebrity book club. This one launched in the Fall of 2019 and it’s probably the best one of the bunch.
River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer
February 2023 Good Morning America Book Club Pick
Prior to reading this story, I had little concept of what the end of slavery meant in the Caribbean. I knew nothing of the apprenticeships and horrible conditions formerly enslaved people were forced to endure.
And I certainly had no idea of what it would take to reunite a family of formerly enslaved individuals who had been ripped apart when they were sold by their owners.
Rachel’s story changes that. She runs away from the plantation in Barbados to reunite with her family. She sets off on a journey to find her 5 children. What she finds out about each encompasses some of the many ways a formerly enslaved person’s life could turn out.
I don’t think anyone will be able to read this story without shedding a tear and thinking hard about colonialism and the ripple effects it has had on generations. This is another book that is heavier in our ultimate beach reads 2023 post but you will not want to miss reading this pick.

Oprah’s Book Club – February 2023 Celebrity Book Club Spoiler
Oprah doesn’t release her book club picks in the same way as the rest of the celebrity book clubs. Her current pick is below.
Demon Cooperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
November 2022 Oprah Book Club Pick
Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It’s the story of a boy born to a teenage single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damage to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for listeners of this novel, but he provided its inspiration… MORE
