I know that it can be difficult to think of book club questions that capture themes and major plot points of a book. That is why I made this post. I wanted you to be able to read the book and think about your feelings while I provided you with the Sandwich Book Club questions.

I have tried to keep this as spoiler-free as possible, but I knew that any Sandwich Book Club questions would be incomplete without some details.

Sandwich Book Club Questions and Discussion Guide

  1. What were the secrets in the book? How did they impact the characters?
  2. Three generations of women kept secrets in the book, is there a connection between secret keeping and motherhood.
  3. Many women experience miscarriage, and everyone reacts differently. What do you think of the way Rocky handled this situation, and did you feel it was realistic?
  4. Let’s talk about the sandwich generation. What does this term mean to you?
  5. Do you think Rocky is a good mother? What aspects of her parenting could you relate to or not relate to?
  6. Do you think that Rocky overreacted to her parents’ aging?
  7. Why do you think Rocky’s dad never shared about his past?
  8. Sandwich making is used throughout the book as a metaphor for motherhood and being in the sandwich generation. Did you pick up on this while reading?
  9. Who was your favorite character?
  10. Why do you think Rocky feels like she needs to be in the middle of everyone’s emotional turmoil?
  11. How did you feel about Rocky? It is interesting reading a book where the main character gives every thought freely. She is the opposite of an unreliable narrator.

Is Sandwich by Catherine Newman a good pick for my book club?

Yes! There is so much to talk about in this book. Kirsten and I chose this book for our book club and had the best discussion. There is so much to talk about related to motherhood, family dynamics, being a child of aging parents, and more.

Is Wreck by Catherine Newman a sequel to Sandwich?

No, but also yes. Wreck is a standalone book that takes place two years after Sandwich. You do not need to have read Sandwich to love Wreck. However, you may want to refamiliarize yourself with the characters if you have already read it.
