Top 5 Alice Hoffman Books (In No Particular Order)
Practical Magic
Author: Alice Hoffman
Year: 1995
Genre: Fantasy/ Magical realism
More info: Practical Magic Series
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Age Range:15+
Plot
For years, the Owens women have known that their bad luck is because of a curse. This book is the first book written in the Practical Magic series. I adore this tale of magic, family, and sisterhood. At this point, this is one of the best magical realism books and it is truly iconic.
Gillian and Sally are sisters who have been raised by their two aunts after their parents die. They both want to leave their small Massachusetts town. But, when Gillian gets into trouble, she runs to Sally for help.
The trouble comes back to haunt them and when a police chief comes to town looking for answers, the sisters try hard to cover up their family secrets. The powerful bond between the Owens sisters brings this story to life and is a constant throughout all the books in the series. This is the first published book in the Practical Magic series and the one I recommend you read first.
Why Jackie loves it
This is truly an iconic witch book and is one of the cases where the movie has become iconic as well. I love the story but also the unbreakable bond between Sally and Gilly. This story is about truly finding yourself
Why Kirsten loves it
I love Practical Magic as part of a series and as a stand-alone novel. The bonds of sisterhood are so strong that the magic and the story leave me with that feeling you get after an amazing book. This is also my go-to Halloween movie along with Hocus Pocus.

The Marriage of Opposites
Author: Alice Hoffman
Year: 2015
Genre: Fiction
More info:Stand Alone Book
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Age Range: 16+
Plot
I love Alice Hoffman’s books and this book did not disappoint me. Marriage of Opposites is an amazing story about Rachel Pomie, the mother of Camille Pissarro (the father of impressionism). Â
Rachel is an orthodox Jewish woman living on the Island of Saint Thomas. The story follows her amazing life through two marriages, beautiful friendships, and many children. This is a unique and fascinating biographical fiction.
Why Jackie loves it
The story of Rachel Pomie is so interesting but Hoffman’s signature writing style adds so much to the story. I felt a connection to her and cared about where her story was going.

This historical fiction carnival book is a must-read and one of the best books set in New York I have read. Alice Hoffman writes some of the most compelling books on subjects that are so unique.

The World That We Knew
Author: Alice Hoffman
Year: 2019
Genre: Magical realism
More info: Longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal
Age Range: 16+
Plot
During WWII, in Germany, Hanni Kohn knows that she must do something to save her 12-year-old daughter from the Nazis. In desperation, she seeks out someone who can make a Golem take her daughter to safety.
Instead of the Rabbi, his daughter Ettie helps Hanni and creates a golden named Ava. The lives of the three women are forever intertwined. This beautiful story is about love, life, and friendship. It was simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking.
Why Jackie loves it
The subject of WWII is an extremely difficult topic especially when it involves the lives of children. This book spoke to me as a person but also as a Jewish mother. It asks the question of what a mother would give and do to save her children. Hoffman was able to take this subject and give it a small magical twist. In doing so, she turns the unimaginable into a fantastical story of resilience.

The Newest Alice Hoffman Book
The Invisible Hour
Author: Alice Hoffman
Year: 2023
Genre: Magical Realism
More info: Stand Alone Novel
Spice Rating:đź’‹
Age Range: 16+
Plot
This fantasy is a story of love, heartbreak, and the magic of books. Mia Jacob is on the verge of sinking herself into a river when the book The Scarlet Letter saves her. The words seem to tell her story of growing up in an oppressive cult where contact with the outside world is forbidden and reading books is a heinous crime.
Even more daunting is the inscription on the inside cover of the book. It is inscribed to her. This is a time travel romance book as only Hoffman could do it. I loved the audio version of the book- it brought life and depth to this story.
Why Jackie loves it
Alice Hoffman has a place in my heart with all of her books, including Practical Magic (one of my favorite series). So it is no surprise that I love this Alice Hoffman book. It is a book lover’s dream come true. I don’t want to give any more of the plot away 🙂
