Dragon Books for Kids
This month, we have fairy tale fever. Between the recent release of Dragons Love Tacos 2, which we commemorated with a playroom inspired by the book, our favorite princess picture books, and next week’s storybook adventure location, we are going back to basics. Why do knights, princesses, dragons, and castles inspire so much imagination? We aren’t sure, but we do know that our children are caught up in these types of fairy tales as much as we are. Dragons, in particular, seem to cross all age brackets and genders. We decided to compile the best dragon kids books to inspire the lords and ladies of your castle.

Dragon Books for Babies
That’s Not My Dragon by Fiona Watt
A board book for your littlest dragon lover featuring colorful images, simple text and touchable spots on each page.
My Lucky Little Dragon by Joyce Wan
This adorable board book teaches little ones about the Chinese zodiac. Clunky manga images and a mirror at the end add fun.
Dragon Books for Kids Aged 3 to 7
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin
Both the original story and the sequel feature taco-eating dragons who can’t stand spicy salsa! The whimsical illustrations are childlike and the stories are just plain silly!
Hush Little Dragon by Boni Ashburn
As humans, we sing Hush, Little Baby to our little ones. It only makes sense that a Dragon Mom would sing the same tune with a slightly different tale. Think about momma bringing knights, princesses, queens and the like.
George and the Dragon by Chris Wormell
This fantastically illustrated story tells the story of a terrible dragon, who is afraid of mice, and George, the mouse that just moved in next door.
There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon by Jack Kent
When a dragon shows up in a young boys room, he tries to tell his family. The more they deny his story, the larger the dragon gets!
Puff, the Magic Dragon by Peter Yarrow and Lenny Lipton
This is one of my favorite songs to sing to my kids. What I love about the book so much are the wonderful illustrations that leave the story with a positive feeling at the end.
Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch
Featured in our “not your average princess post“, this book proves that the princess can save the prince and still live happily ever after without him!

Dragon Series for Kids 6 to 9
This is a wonderful series for the early reader. High-frequency words, great story, and bright colorful pictures fill these stories. See our previous post on this series.
My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett
This is the first book in a trilogy. It is a wonderful, magical book that is rich in plot and imagination. It says 6+ for age range, but my 3 and 5-year-olds enjoy listening to me read this tale to them at bedtime.
Magic Treehouse Series: Dragon of the Red Dawn by Mary Pope Osbourne
Another read-aloud for our bedtime repertoire, we love this entire series and have talked about it before. (Magic Treehouse Egypt). The author’s ability to weave a charming tale while teaching about history and legends, this time in the form of Camelot and King Arthur.
Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon
Dragonbreath is a graphic novel that is funny, engaging and perfect for a little witch or wizard who would like to encounter dragons a little less menacing than the ones Harry encounters. If you love books like Harry Potter for kids, this is a perfect first graphic novel.
