Summary of Whistler by Ann Patchett

Ann Patchett, writer extraordinaire and owner of Parnassus Books in Nashville, published her newest book in June 2026. Whistler is a perfect pick for a book club because of its themes and the wonderful writing. I wanted to provide a summary of Whistler, complete with the ending, to refresh your memory before your book club.

Like many of Patchett’s books, the novel is character-driven. We learn about the past through conversations and memories. The novel is gentle and tender as it guides the reader through one tragic night and its aftermath. This Whistler summary is a perfect companion to the Whistler Book Club Questions for your next book club.

Brief Summary of Whistler by Ann Patchett

Whistler is a beautiful and quiet book about Daphne finding her stepfather, Eddie, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art after not seeing him for more than 40 years. Whistler revisits one night in the past when Daphne and Eddie were in a car accident. The night changed both of their lives irrevocably. Now, Daphne and Eddie are given the chance to reconnect as adults.

The story moves back and forth between the night of the accident and the present, after Daphne and Eddie have reconnected. The development of the relationships is told in tidbits throughout the story. In this way, the Whistler summary is fairly chronological. However, we do not find out everything that happened in the accident until the very end of the book.

Summary of Whistler by Ann Patchett

Daphne and her husband, Jonathan, decide to go to the Met for an afternoon date before Jonathan leaves to help his sister clean out his mother’s house. Daphne is recounting the age difference between her and Jonathan- 17 years. They are currently 53 and 70.

Jonathan notices someone following them in the museum. They decide to cut through the armory to go to modern and contemporary to see if the man is still following them. He is. It turns out that the old man is named Eddie Triplet. It’s her stepfather, who she has not seen in 44 years, since she was 9. Her current stepfather is Lucas Eckert, who lives with her mom in Boston. Daphne’s father, Neil Zaborski (AKA Buddy), died.

Eddie is 76 years old and is working as an editor at Random House. Eddie and Abigail (Daphne’s mom) met when they worked at Houghton Mifflin Publishing. He was an editor, and she is a publicist. When they got divorced, she insisted that he find a new job.

Daphne does not give details about the divorce at this point in the book. She insists that it was her fault. After the night of the accident, Abigail insisted Eddie move out of the house. He moved to New York and got a job with Simon and Schuster after the divorce. He then moved to Random House.

Jonathan is a retired hospital administrator whose first wife died of cancer 5 years before Daphne met him.

Abigail married Eddie at when she was 23. He left her to go back to be on the family fishing boat. He did not want a life away from the water.

Daphne says that Lida had appendicitis, which indirectly led to the accident. When she told Jonathan about the accident (he asked about the scar on her head), she lied and said her mom, Abigail, was driving.

Friday, January 18, 1980

At lunchtime, Leah suddenly became very ill with a 103.5 fever and vomiting. Eddie knew it was appendicitis because his brother had appendicitis when they were younger and nearly died from the ruptured appendix. If Abigail had let Leda go to sleep, rather than going to the hospital, she would have died. Her appendix ruptured during the surgery.

Eddie picked up Daphne at school. The plan was to go home, pack a bag for Leda and Abigail, pick up dinner for Abigail, and then go to the hospital. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, Eddie and Daphne decide to go to a nearby raspberry farm to look at the stars, even though it was wintertime. They went because Leda loved all things raspberry.

Abigail and Eddie had been married for 14 months and had dated for a year before that.

The car drove off the edge while they were looking at the stars.

Now

Abigail got married for the third time when Daphne was 12 to Lucas, who was a Methodist. Abigail had been his publicist. He made his money with numerous books about positivity that got squashed when the AIDS epidemic began.

Initially, Leda had a problem with Daphne‘s marriage to Jonathan. Daphne took care of Buddy while he was undergoing chemotherapy at Jonathan’s hospital. This is how the two of them met. Leda expressed her opinion as a therapist that it is not normal to lose your absent father and then marry the hospital administrator who is 17 years older than you. They have been married for 20 years, and now Leda loves him.

Jonathan is going to pack up his mother‘s things with his sister in Wisconsin. Daphne will not come because she will not fly. Jonathan thinks there’s a chance that Daphne would run away with Eddie since older men love her. She keeps trying to explain to him that Eddie is her stepfather.

Jonathan is becoming frustrated because he is retired and he wants to travel. Daphne, on the other hand, is only 53 and is still teaching. Jonathan’s first wife, Candy, was 40 when she died and never had the time to travel. Daphne suggests that he travel with his sister.

Abigail began the proceedings to divorce four days after the car accident. She says Eddie was irresponsible and blames Daphne as well.

Eddie invites Daphne to his friend’s 50th anniversary party. It’s at the Century Club and there will be 50 couples. His date had to cancel, and he insists they will be very upset if there are not exactly 50 couples. Eddie asks Daphne not to tell her mom about it. He is afraid she will talk Daphne out of coming. Daphne agrees, but she also doesn’t tell Jonathan.

Daphne goes to her sister’s house to get ready for the party. She is talking with Leda and wondering why their Mother and Eddie got a divorce. Henry, Leda’s son, suggests that Eddie is gay.

The anniversary party is for Skip and Polly Hotalling. Skip is Eddie’s best friend and roommate from Yale. When they get to the party, Eddie introduces Daphne as his daughter. He was the best man at Skip and Polly’s wedding. They were not at his wedding to Abigail because she wouldn’t allow it. There are five tables of 10 people at each table. Each of their four kids and spouses is at a different table. Daphne and Eddie are sitting at the table with Skip and Polly.

Daphne and Eddie left the party to walk through New York at night. Eddie is reminiscing about the Sephora that used to be a big store at the bottom of the Scribner building. Daphne and Eddie inadvertently crash a wedding where they run into an old student. It turns out, the bride is also her past student.

Daphne wants information from Eddie. She wants to know how his relationship with her mother started. Eddie tells Daphne that he is gay.

When Eddie and Skip met in school, it took only twenty-three days for them to get together. Despite their relationship, Skip married Polly. He had the idea that they should both get married and take family vacations together. Skip went to Harvard for law school, and Eddie started to work at Houghton Miflen.

When Abigail went out with Polly and Skip, Skip was terrible to Eddie. Abigail could not believe Eddie would be friends with someone who treated him that way. She told Eddie that they could be together as long as Eddie gave up Skip! He thought he could do that.  When Abigail made Eddie leave after the accident, Eddie had to live on the Hotalling’s couch

Summary of Whistler Continued

While Eddie and Daphne were in the car after the accident, he told her the story of Mary and her horse, Whistler. Eddie received a book proposal in 1980 that came with a picture of a horse. The picture of the horse was in the box of stuff that Abigail packed up and sent to the Hotalling house, and he still has that picture.

It took a year for his ankle to recover. 

When Daphne arrived back at Leda’s house, she told Henry, “You were right.” 

Friday, January 18, 1980

Eddie drove the car off a mountain. He is trying to assess the situation. Who will find them and notice they are not home, since Abigail is not home- she is with Leda in the hospital. 

Daphne took off her seatbelt and fell on Eddie. There is Coke and chicken tenders everywhere. There is a lot of blood, and Eddie’s ankle is shattered. Eddie ties his tie around Daphne’s head to hold the bandages in place.

Daphne is able to climb into the back and finds the emergency bag that Buddy put in the back of the car with a space blanket, a flashlight, batteries, and medical supplies. Neither of them thought to try the radio.

Once upon a time…..Eddie begins to tell the story of Mary Carter. Mary grew up with a family who raised sheep and horses. Mary’s horse’s name was Whistler. She trained Whistler to come when she whistled- hence the name. After a storm that blew the gate to the paddock open, Nutmeg (her daughter’s horse) was missing. She went to find Nutmeg.

Whistler was spooked by lightning, and Mary fell off the horse. She had no way to get herself back home.

Eddie questions why he started telling this story!

Mary is cold and wet, with a broken ankle and wrist, broken ribs, collapsed lung.

Suddenly, a little dog runs up to her. She is convinced it’s her dead dog, Marty. She sees Susan (best friend from childhood who died in childbirth), her father, and then her son Jeffrey, who died three years before. Jeffrey came to stay with her while she lay there for three days. Jeffrey told her she needed to whistle. Whistler came to Mary and knelt down. Mary was able to get on Whistler. 

Now

Daphne finally calls her mother and asks to visit her. Mom treats her like she is a telemarketer. She feels like her mother doesn’t make a place for her and didn’t ever make a place for her in her new life with Lucas.

Daphne is surprised that her mom knows all about Eddie still working at PRH. She tells Abigail, “I need you to help me understand”. Abigail agrees that Daphne can visit the next day.

Daphne wants to go to the raspberry farm to see where the accident happened. Abigail and Daphne discuss Eddie’s relationship with Skip. Abigail admits that she thinks Skip was not good enough for Eddie. Abigail hates Skip and the way he spoke to Eddie. Skip said, “If you were going to waste your life like that, you should’ve gone to Vietnam and gotten it over with.”

Daphne and Abigail made it to the raspberry farm without finding the place of the accident. 

Abigail admits that she promised to give Eddie all her love if he promised never to see Skip again and stop being gay. She admits that Matthew is gay, and it gave her the chance to redeem herself. She told Matthew about Eddie. 

Skip came to the hospital. Abigail saw him there with his head on Eddie, and that was when she said it was over. It was never anything to do with Daphne.

Abigail wanted Buddy to give up the ocean for her and Eddie to give up men. She gave ultimatums to men who could not follow through- even if they wanted to.

Buddy lost his football scholarship when he hurt his hand on his boat in a lobster trap. Abigail got pregnant and told him to give up going out on the boat on the weekends. Buddy tried but eventually chose working on the boat.

Daphne went to see Eddie at work. He texted her on her train ride back from visiting her mom.

Eddie told Daphne about his relationship with Skip: A habit he should have quit a long time ago. They are not sure what his wife Polly knows and what she chooses to ignore. 

Eddie asks Daphne why she never had children. She admits that she didn’t have a happy childhood. Didn’t want to do that to someone else.

Candy Fuller- collected rabbit paintings. Candy was dead for 5 years when Jonathan met Daphne. They had two daughters. Rachel, who was 14 when Candy died, and Sydney. Both girls were in college when Daphne met them.

They were not amused by Daphne’s age.  Leda helped bridge the gap between the girls and Daphne.

Daphne agrees to go to Hotalling’s house for brunch with Eddie.

Jonathan came home early from packing his mother’s things. Daphne told him everything that had happened in the last few weeks. Jonathan came with her to the Hotallings’ house. 

Polly is oblivious and over the top. She makes too much food, insists that Daphne drink alcohol, and gets mad because Jonathan would not go out in the boat with Ed and Skip. He wanted to be with Daphne. Polly starts crying had it all planned out that she would talk to Daphne when the men were on the boat. She mentions leukemia.

She accuses Daphne of coming back for money. Jonathan reassures Polly. He says it’s chronic lymphocytic leukemia and all the numbers are stable. He is lying to Polly. He knew nothing about Ed being sick.

Eddie came back to their house. They gave him the rabbit tour. He needed to sit because he is not feeling great.

Summary of Whistler: Ending

Ten months later, Eddie is retired. His health started declining.

Jonathan finished cleaning Mom’s house and found a locked box with watches, and went on the trip to Norway with his sister.

Daphne talks about the differences when she took Buddy to chemo. She actually appreciated that she was able to spend time with him.

Both Candy and Buddy had metastatic melanoma

Buddy’s big regret is that he never got to fly a plane. He wanted to see Big Sur in California. Daphne bought two first-class tickets so she could take him on the trip, with the doctor’s approval.

Buddy died on the plane on the way back.

She called Jonathan, and Jonathan arranged everything to get Buddy off the plane. This is the reason that she will never fly again.

Lucas dies in his garden at the age of 90. Leda was closer to Lucas than Daphne. Abigail sells the house.

Eddie is still going to chemo. Eddie and Abigail have started passing notes and keeping in touch. Eddie wants Daphne to tell him that he is dead when he dies. He does not want to be stuck in the Bardo. She brought him home from chemo, and Skip was waiting at his house.

Friday, January 18 & Saturday, January 19, 1980

Eddie is sitting in the car, contemplating how they are going to get out of the car. It is covered in snow, and it is still snowing. 

Eddie gives Daphne instructions for how to get out of the car, climb the hill, and find someone to help them.

Now

Eddie has to walk with a cane. His blood cell count is fluctuating.

Jonathan is working as an administrator at another small hospital. He came out of retirement.

January 19, 1980

Eddie and Daphne were brought to the hospital in an ambulance on a gurney. Abigail lost it when she found out! Daphne packed it all away. 

Now

Abigail is taking 2.5 hours to get ready to see Eddie. Daphne and Leda acknowledge that she prefers her sons to her daughters, and she likes Jonathan more than Steve

They go to Eddie’s, where Abigail and Eddie hug for the first time in more than 40 years. They talk about nostalgia for publishing.

Leda begins to tell the story of the accident, and Abigail does not want to hear about it. Eddie wants to know how Daphne found help. Abigail wouldn’t let Eddie and Daphne be alone to talk about it. Everyone wants to hear what happened against Abigail’s wishes. 

January 19, 1980

The car was a 1972 Impala station wagon. Daphne lowered herself down into the snow. It was a steep climb up the hill. Daphne tied Eddie’s tie to a branch to remember where the car was located down the hill and through the trees. She walked straight through the snow and found a house, but it is empty. She walked back in the direction she came from and found the tie again. She walked in a different direction and found a small yellow house with Frank the husband, two girls, a dog, and the wife. 

She went to the bathroom, and when she got out, they had a fire truck, police, and an ambulance. She showed them the tie! They were able to get Eddie out of the car. They put them both in the ambulance side by side.

Now

Leda and her husband leave. Eddie, Daphne, Abigail, and Jonathan go to the MET. Eddie forgets his cane and is too tired to walk anymore. He asks to sit for a while.

Eddie tells her to write it in a book that ends with them sitting on the bench together at the MET. He suggests one more ending scene with a flashback.

The book ends just like Eddie suggested- a little flashback

January 19, 1980

Paramedics place an inflatable cast on his ankle before they cut him out of the car.  They get in the ambulance and head to the hospital, with Eddie saying Daphne is the best daughter in the world.
