Age Range: 16+

Ava is from a small town in Maine with a strict family and a rural upbringing. When she arrives at Radcliffe for her first year, she meets Lauren, who is from a prominent Cambridge family.

On their first night, they are both recruited by the Lilith society, a secret society of witches. When girls from the Lilith society begin to go missing, they begin to question their own safety.

Filled with witch lore and dark omens, Ava and Lilith must navigate friendship and love in the 1950s.

Historical reference to trauma/ murders during the witch trials

This book is unlike the books in the Practical Magic Series. It is much darker, with references to black blood, the eleventh finger, etc. I wish I had been aware when I started the book so that I could enjoy it more. Like Hoffman’s other historical fiction books, this one is heavily researched, but it includes references to magic that are so realistic that it feels like it could be fact. #SimonAudioInfluencer

September 2026 Good Morning America Book Club Spoiler

GMA’s answer to Read with Jenna was to host their own celebrity book club. This one launched in the Fall of 2019, and it’s probably the best one of the bunch.

Laurel is a mycologist (study of fungus) who flees to Antarctica to work as a dishwasher. She is drawn to the strange life of 6 months of daylight followed by 6 months of darkness. She hopes that she will be able to start to heal after the loss of her son. When a strange light appears across the ice, a group of physicists comes to investigate, and Laurel is shocked to see that her ex-husband, Eli, is one of them. He initially thinks she followed him there to reconcile, but quickly realizes that Laurel has been there for months.

Laurel is convinced that the arc is the exact concept her husband had thought of years ago: a duoverse, and that it will allow them to turn back the clock and relive their lives a second time. The purpose? To find their son.

What follows is a trip into an alternate universe where fungi are the beginnings of life, and time works backward. Life begins at the end and moves forward, so people grow younger.

Child Death, Suicidal Thoughts

I cannot believe that Benjamin does not have advanced degrees in physics and biology. This book is so creative and unique; at times, I had to put the book down to absorb the information and the brilliant world Benjamin created. This book has elements of Benjamin Button and parts of Interstellar as well. Benjamin’s creativity has no limit.
