I loved this look at young love and the way it can forever impact our lives. It also has a healthy discussion around abortion and examines both political sides of the argument in a way that feels authentic and real. This will be great for book club discussions! #gifted by Zibby Publishing

Historical Fiction: June 2025 Book Releases

The English Masterpiece
Author: Katherine Reay
Year: 2025
Genre: Historical Fiction
Spice Rating:💋
Age Range: 14+
Plot
Lily, an assistant at the Tate, is helping her boss, Diana, plan a major Picasso exhibit. The exhibit features Picasso’s iconic works as well as a newly discovered painting. When Lily publicly claims one of the paintings is a forgery, her accusation throws the art world into chaos and puts her career and her mentor’s reputation at risk. With time running out, Lily must follow the clues and prove that she was right before she loses everything.
Why Kirsten likes it
This had all the pieces I’m looking for in a historical mystery, artwork, a protagonist on the lamb, a dual narrative, and a fun setting (1970s at the Tate Museum), but Lily drove me batty. Her constantly losing attention to her surroundings came off as grating rather than charming, and her woe-is-me attitude was even remarked upon by her family members. If she had been a stronger character I would have rated this one higher, but in the end, this was a like not a love.

Plot
Joan is a professor of physics and astronomy at Rice University, and she sees an advertisement for women to join the NASA space shuttle program. She applies and is chosen from thousands of applicants. She begins training in the summer of 1980 and forms deep friendships with the other astronauts in the program.
In December 1984, everything changed on mission STS-LR9. The book alternates between Joan’s application to the space program and her years of training, and the present mission in which there is an accident in space with Joan at mission control.
Why Jackie loves it
This book sucked me in from the first page. It’s crazy to think how far we have come in some ways and how stagnant we are in others. The amount of sexism that these women had to overcome to be in the space program felt personal but not exaggerated. #gifted

She sewed one bracelet into the hem of Collette’s and her little sister’s nightgowns. The night her mother was arrested, her little sister went missing along with a diamond bracelet.
Now, seventy years later, the bracelet has turned up in a Boston museum, and Colette finally has the chance to learn what happened to her sister and bring the murderer to justice.

Why Jackie loves it
Why is this the first Kristen Harmel book I have read?! I can tell you it will not be the last. This book grabbed me from the first page and took me on a thrilling, emotional ride. There were so many aspects of this story that came together beautifully in the end. This is a powerful story that has so many true components, I found myself crying and smiling throughout. Why Kirsten loves it
The subtle magical realism of the sweetwater helps to heighten the tension of the already elevated stakes of the story. Read the author’s note where it’s clear the incredible amount of research Stiefvater did for this story and the wonderful way she incorporated real historical events into the novel.
The dynamics of the hotel guests, the love triangle, the sweetwater, and the incredible characters all combined to create a narrative unlike any other.

A Most Puzzling Murder
Author: Bianca Marais
Year: 2025
Genre: Not so Cozy Mystery
More info: Author of Hum if You Don’t Know the Words, one of Jackie’s Top 10 All-Time Favorite Books
December 2024 Beyond the Bookends Book Club Pick
Age Range: 16+
Plot
Destiny Whip, an enigmatologist who has not left her house in a year, receives a mysterious job offer to be the Scruffmore family historian, a job she did not apply for. Try as she might, she can find no information about the family, but the invitation is a hidden message that promises to reveal family secrets. The best part? You, as the reader, get to partake in solving the clues.
Destiny is enticed by the idea of learning more about herself and follows the clues to Eerie Island. When she arrives, she discovers why the Island has the name “Eerie” and finds hidden messages, a looming murder, and a magical royal family. As her visions reveal a death that hasn’t happened, she must race to solve the mystery before it’s too late.
Why Jackie loves it
I love a great puzzle, and this book not only has that, but it also allows you to interact with Destiny via email if you need help solving the clues. I did this for the fun of the interaction! There is also some choose-your-own-adventure in the story. This is the most fun I have had reading a book in ages. I added sticky notes in the pages because, even though Marais encourages you to mark within the pages, I could not bring myself to do it. If you are reading digitally, there is a printable to help you work out the puzzles!

She embarks on a river cruise in France but gets caught up in a murder mystery when a fellow passenger dies unexpectedly. As she digs deeper, she uncovers secrets about the victim and is even accused of inadvertently smuggling art for him!
Why Kirsten loves it
I love that the protagonist is 68, starting her life over, and going on an adventure while also being wrapped-up in a stolen art murder mystery! The setting of the river cruise was delightful, but it was Mrs. Blossom’s winning personality that really kept this novel afloat (Pun intended!) #gifted by Libro.fm

Battle of the Bookstores
Author: Ali Brady
Year: 2025
Genre: Romance
More info: Bestselling Author
Spice Rating:💋💋💋
Age Range: 18+
Plot
Josie and Ryan manage competing bookstores in the same building in Boston. Josie runs her store with literary fiction on the shelves, and Ryan’s store is all romance. When their new boss merges the stores, they’re forced into a summer-long competition to see who can make the biggest profit. The winner will keep their job as manager and manage both stores. He will use any tactic to pit Josie and Ryan against each other.
To complicate things even more, they have unknowingly become online confidants in a book forum. Friends online, enemies in person, and that is just the beginning. As their rivalry heats up, so does an unexpected attraction, a textbook “opposites attract” trope.
Why Jackie loves it
There is so much to love about this book, I do not know where to start. Think of this book as the movie version of You’ve Got Mail. The book makes reference to the one-bed trope and so many other tropes that it absolutely cracked me up! I love the references to books- literary, romance, historical and more. This is a romance that is as much a love story between two people as it is the love for the written word
